Duncan and Courtney were at Courtney's house, in the middle of a passionate make-out session. Duncan thought maybe they could get to second base today. Duncan decided to take it to the next level and slowly started to undo the buttons of Courtney's tan long sleeved shirt. He started to slide down the sleeves of Courtney's shirt. Courtney noticed, and pulled away.
"Is something wrong?" Duncan asked her. "Did you not want me to…?"
Courtney frowned and shook her head bashfully, turning away. Normally, if he did something stupid or something that pissed her off she'd be pissed and start nagging. But this time she didn't even nag or scoff or yell. This time she looked… broken?
"Are you okay?" Duncan asked and scooted closer to her. "You can tell me anything."
Courtney shook her head again, as if she was about to burst into tears. Duncan honestly had no idea as to what the hell was going on.
Courtney slid off the rest of her shirt (she had a tank-top underneath) and pointed to her arms. Duncan looked. I can't hide this any longer…
Duncan hadn't noticed before since Courtney was always wearing long-sleeved shirts. Courtney had medium-sized jagged red lines running down her both of her arms.
"Are those…?"
"Scars?" Courtney asked, whispering.
"But why?"
"I used to-," Courtney started and started to tear up. Duncan embraced her in a hug. "I used to harm myself and I was abused."
A girl as strong and confident as Courtney cutting herself? Duncan couldn't even imagine…
"But, why?" Duncan asked again.
"It was my dad," Courtney replied and Duncan listened carefully. "He'd tell me I ruined his life and I was the reason he was fired from his job. He would make me feel like I had to resort to something as bad as that. He'd call me worthless, trash, he'd hit me…, pressure me to get all A's and when I didn't him hit me again…"
"Where's the jackass now?" Duncan asked, angry that someone would call his princess worthless or trash or hit her.
"He's in jail now… I haven't seen him since I was 10 and I'm sixteen now." Courtney began to sob quietly.
"How long did this go on and didn't your mom do something about it?"
"I couldn't tell her because he threatened me if I did…I wore long sleeved shirts to cover up my scars. It wasn't until one day my mom opened the door and saw what he was doing. He'd never hit mom but he'd hit me. He'd act like nothing was going on when my mom was there but when she left… it started."
"Why didn't you tell me all of this, Court?"
"My problems are my problems and nobody else's'."
"But Court, you can tell me anything, okay?" Duncan hugged her tighter.
Courtney nodded.
"No more secrets, princess."
