last SSB fanfic for awhile because I don't want to write SSB all the time. I'm still working on my multi-chaptered story, but it's on hiatus because I have no thoughts for it. I'll get back to it, hopefully before the summer ends.

it's quite OOC i'm sorry

She grits her teeth and reaches for a glass of champagne. She's not going to drink it, of course; it's just there to give her hands something to do.

"You care too much, Zel," Sheik says. "He's just a stupid boy."

Zelda glares at her. "Not in the mood, Sheik."

Sheik rolls her red eyes and taps Zelda's glass. "I'll be nice, I guess." She flits away, and within seconds Zelda loses sight of her. Probably for the best, anyways—Sheik isn't the best person to talk to about boys, seeing how she is so disinterested in them.

But it's not like Zelda can talk to anyone else about the topic, anyways. Rosalina does not have time for romance, Peach drones on and on about her short little plumber, Palutena has been flirting with Ike too much to care, Lucina and Robin are both married, and Samus—well, is Samus.

Zelda's hand tightens on the glass; don't think about her, she tells herself, but it doesn't quite work, because her eyes find Samus anyways.

The bounty hunter is talking to Marth, her fingers dancing up to Marth's shoulder; the Hero King looks flustered, and he doesn't quite say anything, even as Samus's hand comes to a stop dangerously close to his neck.

Zelda's mouth straightens into a flat line, and she turns away, blinking fast. She doesn't have to put up with them; they aren't bothering her.

At least, not until the inevitable happens, when she's in the bathroom, washing her hands, when Samus walks in. Her blonde hair is a waterfall down her back; thick and curling at the edge. Apparently, she came to comb it, but Zelda really doubts it needs combing, even as the small black comb runs through those blonde waves.

They exchange a look, fake smiles plastered on their face, the masks of hate hidden quite well. Zelda knows what Samus wants to say, and silently prays that she won't bring it up.

But, Samus can be cruel. And she brags to Zelda about Marth anyways, despite the fact they both know he isn't hers yet, despite the fact they both know about Zelda's feelings for the man. But Zelda just nods and smiles and leaves as quickly as she can.

Marth is standing alone, off to the side, when she walks in; a shady light is running through his messy blue hair, and his hands are in his pockets. She walks up to him, and they exchange greetings before settling in a comfortable silence. Zelda wants to talk, but she feels like the fragile moment might be shattered, so she doesn't.

The fast, upbeat songs soon slow down into a smooth and sweet tune; a lot of couples hit the floor. Zelda sees Ike offer his arm to Palutena, and when she smiles, she glances at Marth and wishes that he will do that to her.

He looks at her then, too, and opens his mouth, the words Do you floating out, but he never finishes, because Samus swoops in at that exact moment. She smiles apologetically at Zelda before yanking the Hero King out there with her. His hands rest comfortably on her hips; Zelda looks at them briefly before stomping off to join Sheik at a table.

Her counterpart raises an eyebrow, and pushes her drink towards Zelda. She takes it without a thank-you and tilts her head back, letting the liquid wash down her throat.

"You okay?" Sheik asks, and Zelda looks at Samus and Marth again. The girl's head is on his shoulder; Marth looks surprised but happy.

No, she thinks privately, but she just smiles at Sheik and nods, and they both turn to watch the couples dance. Zelda's hands shake, and she reaches for another drink, raising it up in the air.

Cheers, she thinks, and then downs it one gulp.
