Oh what can ail thee, commander-at-arms,
Alone & palely loitering ?
The light has withered from the cell
And yet soldiers all in sight
Oh what can ail thee, commander-at-arms
So haggard & so woe-begone ?
The Atlantians data base is almost full
& the harvest's is nearly done
I see a lily on thy brow
With anguish moist & fever-dew
And on thy cheeks fading grass
Fast withereth too
I saw a lady, walking along the cell rows
Full beautiful- a crystal child
Her hair was long, her foot was light
And her eyes were wild
I made a snarl of warning
My eyes as glares & a hiss
Yet she looked at me as she did like
And made her own sweet hiss
I sat up from my cell floor
The first time in all the days long
For head long she stood and talked,
Her bitter sweet song
She found me standing life to feed
To quench my burning hunger, my primal need
And sure in language strange she said-
"I feel like you"
She took me to her steel lab
And there she worked & yawned
And there I saw her wild wild eyes shut
But for only four moments
And there she stunned me asleep
And there I dreamed –ah! Woe betide!-
The latest dream I ever dreamt
In my cold cell side
I saw pale Wraith, commanders too
Warrior drones, death pale were they all
They cried – "the woman shall have you at her mercy!"-
I saw their starved eyes in the gloom
With horrid warning gaped wide
And I awoke & found my-self here
In my cold cell side
And that is why I stay
Alone & palely loitering
The light has withered from my cell
And no lady in sight.
