"X" calls Mike, noticing the blonde braid of his second in command disappear around he corner.
"X" he tries again, jogging along the corridor to catch her. "Kate!"
"Yes sir" she finally acknowledges, turning swiftly to greet him. He hadn't realised how close they were standing until she was facing him and he smile's awkwardly as they both step back.
"Did you want me?" she asks, turning her head slowly to eye the door. She'd almost gotten away from him!
"Are you trying to avoid me or has it just happened that we've stayed off each other's paths all day long?" he asks, ignoring her question to stress his. He can see her eyes flicker in surprise as she realises she's been caught. Best not smirk yet he reminds him self, he's still a bit sore from her last sting.
"Why would you say that sir?" she asks moments later, shifting from foot to foot subconsciously.
"I just can't imagine any circumstance where the CO and XO don't see each other all day unless one of them doesn't want the other saying something" he counteracts, matching her skimming of the subject with a direct blow. 'That one got you' he notes happily, allowing the smirk to spread across his face now that he's in charge.
"Mike" she murmurs in warning. There's no use for formalities now as they are no longer captain and XO. This is a war of words, as it has always been between them and despite the fact that they both know she's been caught out neither are giving up just yet.
"You wouldn't dare" she challenges, leaning in a little closer so they're not heard.
"You know I would" he throws back, looking her steadily in the eyes. He knows that if he can remain in control she'll crumble with in seconds. One look and she used to be gone, and while time has made them both a bit rusty, neither are having trouble slipping back into their roles.
"Michael" she demands.
"Katline" he reiterates.
Her eyes flicker away from his for a second, unable to concentrate under his determine gaze. 'Damn him' she murmurs, 'he knew he had won from the start and now he's just playing with me'.
"How about we make a deal?" Mike suggests, leaning back to cross his arms victoriously. He may be horribly smug sometimes but today's a special day and he's willing to meet her demands for a price.
"What type of deal?" she asks, eyeing him again warily.
"Well" sigh's Mike, pretending to ponder his choices.
"Just hurry up" mutter's Kate, well aware that she's being mocked.
"Chefo's engagement party" he states, smirking at her.
"What about it?" she asks, though she's already dreading the answer.
"Apparently SingStar is on the menu and from what I've seen you're the only one that hasn't put their name down" he notes, chuckling at the panic spreading across her delicate features. Her eyes are wide with fear, well, more dread he realises with glee.
"Come on Kate, you'll be fine" he promises, touching her shoulder softly.
"Okay then" she relinquishes, heaving a sigh "but only if you sing with me" she adds in quickly.
"Me?" he asks in surprise "why me?"
"Cause you're the only one I know I'll be able to beat" she replies smartly, turning swiftly to saunter down the corridor, leaving her horrified captain standing open mouthed behind her.
"Hey" he calls moments later, recovering his speech. "What's so bad about me telling people what today is, any way?" he asks as she turns to look at him once more.
"Sir" she sighs, "just don't" she offers in reply before disappearing into her cabin.
"Just don't" he murmurs, running her words through his head to try and extract some meaning. He shakes his head in acceptance of her request before walking towards the bridge in search of some work.
He stop's shortly at her door to whisper softly what had been on his mind all day.
"Happy Birthday Kate"
