Korra knew she was late. Really late. The black sky was dotted with tiny white stars that swirled into a mosaic. She had promised to be home hours ago. Practice had run late. The council meeting ran even later.

She had promised to be home in time for dinner. Tonight was special. They were going to celebrate their year anniversary. She let out a long breath of air and jetted down the empty street faster. The few people still out ignored the now-common air bending. The cold air bit at her face and she puffed fire in small busts to warm her.

The apartment building was dark except for a couple of windows glowing with yellow light. Their window was dark. She cursed and skidded to a stop. She crept up the stairs and scraped the key in the lock. She jerked the door open and threw her coat towards the coatrack. It fell short and lay in a heap.

"Korra?" Mako's sleepy voice cut through the air.

Korra felt a catch in her throat. She flipped on the light switch and found Mako was sprawled on the sofa with a book tented on his chest and his glasses tilted on his face. His rumbled shirt matched his disheveled hair. He turned to her with a sleepy smile on his face; his amber eyes half-closed. He rubbed his face with hands and then ran his fingers through his hair.

"Sorry I'm late," Korra mumbled and joined him on the sofa.

"Don't, be," Mako murmured sitting up, and then wrapped his arms around Korra. He pulled her close and leaned back with her.

She felt his heart race, and she nestled into his embrace. There was still plenty of time to celebrate.
