The moment the rock crashed down on her head, she knew it was the end. She called for Cato, but when he called back he sounded so far away. She hoped her family wasn't watching. Her mother would curse and yell for Cato to run faster, for Clove to get up and fight. Her dad would just shake his head and bite his lip, the way he always did when he was nervous. Heck, her trainer was probably throwing things. "She trains her whole life, her whole life, and she gets killed by a rock! A stupid rock!" He was probably yelling, all the while secretly crying inside.

She's barely aware of District 12 running to the woods, barely aware when Cato runs up and kneels beside her. "Clove? Clove! Come on Clove, stay with me!" He was starting to cry now, although he would never admit it. Clove grabbed his shirt. "Cato...win…for me" she struggled to whisper. Then, her grip slackened on his shirt and her eyes glazed over and unfocused. A cannon fired. "Clove? Dang it Clove, you can't die! You can't!" He choked back a sob, "I need you. I love you." He whispered the last part; as if it was a secret no one else could hear. Unfortunately she was already gone, and she never heard the whispered words meant only for her.
