Not As Beautiful As You

The snow fluttered softly by the window. The girl stood in front of it, looking out at the beautiful, silent darkness. How she would have loved to trounce through that dark wetness with the fire-haired beauty laughing at her side. But that would not happen this night; that would never happen. For her love loved someone else. She sighed dejectedly as she reminded herself that she would never be more than a friend to her red-haired counterpart. She pushed her wavy blonde hair behind her ear and secured it there with her wand, biting her lip to distract herself from the pain in her chest.

The red-haired girl was beautiful, good at sports, and had a fiery spirit that he blonde could only admire. Not to mention that well-built and unique body covered with all those freckles that formed shapes of creatures if you looked at them just right. And those deep, chocolate brown eyes that showed an underlying sadness and despair that made you want to hold her, protect her, and never let go.

"Luna?" a voice called. It was her voice. The voice that brought warmth and light into Luna's heart.

"Yes, Ginny?" Luna replied, turning to face the red-head that haunted her thoughts, a soft smile on her distant features.

"Lost in thought again?" Ginny asked with a light chuckle. "What were you thinking about this time? Jabberwockies?"

Now what would happen if I told her the truth? Luna mused to herself. Best not to try, it might only hurt more; so she have her dear friend the half-truth. "Just pondering the beauty of the snow."

"It really is beautiful, isn't it?" Ginny replied, moving to stand next to Luna at the window. Ginny's arm brushed against Luna's, sending tiny shocks though her body.

"Not as beautiful as you," Luna whispered softly.

"…. What was that?" asked Ginny absently, not having understood it. The snow was distracting her in its swirls past the window.

"Nothing," Luna said, touching Ginny's hand comfortingly.

"You sure?" Ginny asked and Luna shrugged, pretending to have gone back to watching the snow. "Well, I came to remind you how late it is. The stupid curfew is in fifteen minutes. As I suspected, you had gotten distracted. Didn't want Filch to send you to detention," Ginny said with a smile. Luna melted internally.

"Alright. Thanks," Luna replied, smiling wanly. She grabbed her stuff from the table where she had left it and the two left the library together. Ginny accompanied Luna all the way back to her common room under the pretext that Luna would get distracted on the way and Filch would catch her.

"Well what about you? Now you won't make it back before curfew," Luna commented, flattered by the red-head's concern but she did not want the other girl in detention on her behalf.

Ginny simply smiled and winked conspiritorily. "I can run. I'll be fin. G'night."

"Good night," Luna called after her disappearing friend, softly adding "love" under her breath as the bright hair disappeared around the corner. She turned to enter the Ravenclaw common room. She would not fall asleep until much later. Like every night, her mind would not calm down.
