Comfort in Lothlorien

It was getting dark in the woods of Lothlorien and Aragon son of Arathorn sat in the shadow of a mighty tree, deep in thought.

He had walked out of the Fellowship's camp and into the woods in hope to clear his mind, but he had soon discovered that it had been useless. The brave face he had put on in front of his companions disappeared and all the fear, despair and guilt washed over him.

Aragon felt how he shook all over and leant back against the trunk of the tree for support when his tears started falling from his eyes.

His distress was so deep that he didn't hear the soft steps of feet behind him.

Aragon jerked his head up when he felt a hand touch his shoulder and find himself look into the eyes of Legolas Greenleaf. Aragon stood up and turned away form Legolas worried eyes, ashamed to show his weakness.

"What's wrong mellon nin," asked Legolas in a soft tone. (My friend)

"It's nothing Legolas," Aragon replied equal soft and started to walk away. But he didn't come very far before he felt Legolas' hands on his shoulders. He stopped unsure what to do.

"You don't need to hide anything or be strong in front of me Aragon. Please let go of your despair and guilt, otherwise it will sallow you hole mellon nin," Legolas pleaded and squeezed his shoulders.

Aragon placed his own hand over Legolas and squeezed it in return and softly said:

"I don't think I can Legolas, it's my fault and I deserve this guilt."

Aragon didn't even know what happened next, one minute he was facing the now dark forest and next he was stirring into Legolas angry blue eyes.

"Don't you dare to blame yourself for this Aragon, it wasn't anyone's fault, even less yours," Legolas hissed.

"But it is, I should have done something but I just stood there and watched while everything happened," Aragon cried and felt his tears start to fall again.

Legolas eyes softened and he embraced his friend tight but felt his own eyes fill up with tears when he felt Aragon's despair and it mixed with his own.

When Aragon had calmed down he lifted his head from Legolas shoulder and drew a shaky breath before meeting the elf's eyes.

"I…" Aragon started, but Legolas cut him of.

"You don't need to thank me Aragon I needed this as much as you did."

Aragon looked closely and saw that from his friends eyes where filled with the same guilt that tore at his own heart.

"It wasn't your fault either Legolas," Aragon said with serious voice.

Legolas eyes meet his and a mute moment of understanding passed between them and they knew that they could always come to each other with their problems.

They stood together a long time after that just staring at the clear night sky not knowing anything about what the future held for them, but they knew that they wouldn't face it alone.

The End
