So this is the first time I'm writing an Original fanfic. I've been thinking about it for a while so I finally got around to doing it.

Disclaimer- I do not own the Originals (sigh)

His mood swings were a dangerous thing and he realized it the most himself. For centuries he kept people away from himself mostly to protect himself. But there was always a part of him that wondered what if.

He buried himself behind the walls he put up. The only time he let them down was when he drew.

The scratching of his pencil against the paper was the only sound in the quiet room.

He was working on something new today. He was determined to make this one perfect. Maybe he would give it to her one day, he was thinking as he traced the pencil lightly over the full lips.

Of course, he didn't think that any drawing or painting would do justice to her beauty. It wasn't something that could be captured on paper.

He put down the pencil and gazed at the drawing of the girl before him. The thick wavy hair, the perfect arch of her eyebrows, the mysterious eyes, the full lips. To a casual observer this sketch came as close to her perfection as it could. But to him, it was still light years away.

"Where's Elijah?" came a voice breaking Klaus out of his thoughts.

Hayley walked into the living room one hand on her swollen belly, her hair wasn't brushed but she still looked beautiful.

"Well good morning to you too." said Klaus tonelessly, as he closed his sketchbook "Why are you looking for Elijah?"

Hayley eyed the dark bottle on the table in front of Klaus warily.

"I needed something." replied Hayley cautiously.

She was no stranger to Klaus's unstable moods which seems to grow even more unstable if he drank which he clearly had done.

"Clearly," replied Klaus dryly, " What is it, Hayley?"

"Just some groceries and stuff." replied Hayley trying to keep her voice casual.

"Why aren't you asking me?" asked Klaus sounding annoyed, "do I seem that useless to you?"

Hayley's eyes widened.

"No! Of course not!" replied Hayley thinking of slowly backing out of the room.

In a flash Klaus was next to her.

"I can hear your heartbeat, love." said Klaus his eyes narrowed, " I can tell you're afraid."

Hayley frowned.

"No offense but you've been drinking." replied Hayley, "and we all know it's never a good idea being around drunk Klaus. Not unless you want your throat or heart ripped out or whatever."

Klaus blinked then took a step back.

"I would never hurt you, Hayley." Said Klaus quietly, "And I would never hurt our child."

Hayley nodded. Klaus moved past her to leave but then paused.

"Why do you trust Elijah blindly and me not at all even when I've been trying?" the anguish in his voice was clear.

But before Hayley could reply he was gone.

Shaking her head she started towards the kitchen as Rebekah walked into the living room.

"What's got him in such a foul mood?" she muttered rolling her eyes as she sat down and grabbed the bottle off the table, "There it is and it's still almost full! Thank goodness Nik didn't touch it. I like this one."

"Wait that's yours?" asked Hayley surprised, "You're the one that's been drinking?"

Rebekah sighed.

"Yes mama wolf!" replied Rebekah, "don't judge though, this girl's had a long crappy night."

Hayley left Rebekah alone as she walked back to her room wondering why Klaus hadn't said anything when she had presumed that he had been drinking.

Was he so used to being misunderstood that he just didn't bother correcting people anymore?

There it is. My first Originals one shot. Please please please do R and R :)
