Author's Note: If everything about M*A*S*H was the same, even the goodbye kiss, I wish they would have given us this little tag scene. That's all I ask for...
For the last time, Captain Hawkeye Pierce saw the 4077th M*A*S*H: his home for the past three years. He still could hear the fading motorcycle engine that his friend B.J. was driving away. He motioned with his thumb for the chopper pilot to take off. As they gain altitude, Hawkeye sees his friend's message: "Goodbye" written out with stones. A tear slips from his hawk's eye as he fumbles through the front pocket of his tote bag. He pulls out two 4x6 pictures. The first one we see is of Hawkeye, B.J., Margaret, Colonel Potter, Klinger, Father Mulcahy and Charles. They are gathered around the post, the one with the distances, smiling for the camera. Everyone is together, hands on shoulders, hands holding hands, leaning against each other...it all showed the extent of their family; their support system. The second picture that we see is of Hawkeye, and none other than the female Major. They are holding on to each other, laughing hysterically, about some practical joke they pulled on someone. Hawkeye stares at this picture for a good moment, before his hand returns to the tote bag, searching for something else. He pulls out a small velvet box. Hawkeye opens it, and a letter falls out; a letter that has obviously been folded, opened, and refolded many times in the past. The paper has a yellow-ish tint to it. Hawkeye carefully opens the letter, so as not to damage it from it's original form in any way. When he opens it, he reads it again, and we can see what it says, written in a woman's flowery handwritting:
"My Hawkeye,
This is my wedding ring. It was the one that your father gave me. You won't find this until after I'm gone. I want you to keep this safe, for many years. Wait until you find the girl that you want to spend the rest of your life with, and give this to her. Be sure it is the right girl, this ring is very special.
Take care of yourself, and of your father, Hawkeye. Always remember that I love you, and that I'll always be with you.
I Love You,
Mom"
After reading this letter, for what we know is probably going on the millionth time, Hawkeye refolds it. We see the ring: simple, yet elegant, would be the only way to describe it.
"You're going to Seoul, right Sir?"
Hawkeye takes another good look at the picture of him and Margaret, and then at the ring and the folded letter.
"Actually...can we make a detour to the 8063rd?"
AND THAT SHOULD BE WHERE "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" ENDED...IN MY OPINION!!! Review please! :)
