If They Asked
I know they like laughing with me, "Brooke the Queen of Paperwork and all". But would they laugh at me if they knew?
Knew how out of place it feels to be christened, "Val's little sister," and have them laugh when you ask if you could help them with their homework, or snort when you ask who's going out with who.
I just want to know, and be known. They think I have no like outside of my paperwork. That I never leave my fortress of inventories piled high, my only protection from the outside world.
They assume that I'll always be the young and innocent. If they asked they would know about me and Nick making out at the movies, about Amanda getting drunk at Rachel's party and getting pulled over by the cops, pulling a Jamie.
But then again, that would get Val worried, and I'm not supposed to get her worried. Mom says being an EMT, a cheerleader, and being on High Honor Roll is enough stress in it's self. But if she asked, she would know that being the secretary for the EMTs, being Class President, and just being average is hard enough.
There's a lot to live up to and a lot to do: doing laundry, making dinner, taking care of the house since Mom and Dad work late. They assume it's fine to dump me with all of this, "ambition runs in the family."
Caitie still sees me as the little girl with the mermaid doll. She's the only one who asks but she wouldn't take me seriously with her sarcasm and her "Auntie Caitie" routine.
Nick of course wouldn't understand. He comes from an average family with no over achieving siblings. "Just loosen up Brookie," he smiles and leans in for a kiss.
Kisses don't solve everything, but then again, he would know that if he asked.
