A bitter wind whipped through the long, blonde hair of a lone figure walking soundlessly through the night. The elf turned his far seeing green eyes upward, turning his face towards the light of the stars. Moonlight glowed softly in his skin and hair, a pearly coolness that intertwined with the inner fire of the elf. His lips turned up at the corners in a brief smile before parting slightly as he began to sing.
"Alone in night this bitter cold
Alone with none but stars to guide me
How am I to find the way?
Where now is the light that binds me?
Alone in darkness this aching pain
Alone with none but stars to guide me
How shall my heart remain true?
Who will redeem this lonely soul?"
And a voice from behind answered him;
"No longer are you alone in darkness
For this one will answer your song
Here is the light to strive for
The stars are not to look upon alone"
A hand clasped his shoulder. Legolas Greenleaf spun around, eyes wide. So engrossed in his song he had not heard anyone approach.
"Aragorn!" He sputtered. "I did not know anyone did not yet sleep." Aragorn smiled warmly at him.
"How could I sleep when you remained sleepless? You should not wander alone at night, these are dark days, even for an elf." Legolas cast his gaze downward.
"I did not wish to trouble anyone. I only wished to sing, I did not want to wake anyone."
"Legolas." Came the soft reprimand. "You need not lie to me." Wide, innocent eyes gleamed up at him.
"I speak the tru-" A firm but gentle hand silenced him. The elf's eyes widened.
"Shh. You and I both know you only sing like that when something is troubling you. It regrets me to see you pained so. Why do you feel so alone?" Legolas shook his head. Aragorn sighed. "You need not tell me." He drew the lithe body closer to him. The cold was getting to the elf at last, and he shivered uncontrollably. "Legolas do you not know that I am always here for you and always will be?" Legolas looked into his eyes and knew he spoke the truth. His spirit soared. Aragorn slowly uncovered his mouth and cupped the elf's face in his hands.
"Ai, aniron," he whispered and gently took Legolas' mouth in his. A tremor ran through Legolas' body, and when Aragorn broke away at last he leaned his head on his shoulder. Together they walked off in the night.
"Under the stars I walk with you
The night is no longer cold
Here is the light that guides me
In you I see the hope that binds me
The pain is slowly ebbing away"
"No longer are you alone in darkness
I will stay with you always
When stars fade and fall
We'll be together still
In my arms you'll stay
The stars are not to look upon alone"
