Toothless was dreaming. Again.

Most of his dreams included adventures, mysteries and friendship. Some of them included memories he wanted to stay with him forever. Others were memories he would rather forget.

But this one… this one was different.

He opened his eyes and saw chaos all around him. He was on an island he and Hiccup had not yet discovered. Dragons were fighting dragons everywhere. Toothless guessed it was for territory, due to some of the dragons putting up a desperate defense. Fire was everywhere, sprouting every second turning the sky crimson red. Hatchlings were fleeing from the scene, scared for their lives. And among this, he saw something that looked like two dragons struggling. A battle scarred Monstrous Nightmare was roaring in anger while trying to rip its opponent apart. Toothless' eyes widened when he realized what its opponent was.

It was a female Night Fury.

And she seemed to be losing. Her wings were torn, and she was a bloody mess. Her silver eyes were full of pain and sadness, as if she knew these were her final moments. But why did she seem so… familiar? After shoving the Nightmare away, she turned to Toothless and yelled something at him.

"RUN, NIGHTSHADE! RUN!" she roared. Toothless seemed utterly confused. That wasn't his name. He whirled behind him to see if there was another Night Fury behind him, but he was alone. "GET AS FAR AS YOU CAN AWAY FROM HERE!" the female roared again, this time in pain. "ANYWHERE!" she grunted while trying to pin her rival down. "GO! RUN!" she threw the Nightmare into the flames behind her, then nuzzled Toothless. "And remember…" she spoke softly. "I…I love you."

Toothless opened his mouth to respond, but all that came out was a… squeak? Before he could react, the Nightmare lunged from the flames and closed its jaws around the female Night Fury's neck. She howled in pain as the two thrashed again. Toothless watched in horror, not knowing why he felt so. And finally, with the Nightmare's eyes burning as bright as the fires around them, he tilted his head sharply…

and snapped the female's neck.

She slumped to the ground almost slowly. Her silver eyes seemed to dim out. Toothless' heart sank at the sight. He tried to roar at the killer, but instead he let out a sad screech and ran up to the dead female. He didn't even know what he was doing! He wanted to fight, to show the red beast that he was the Alpha, but his body wasn't moving with his mind. He whimpered in sadness and nuzzled the female. Then he realized… he felt small. He sounded small. What was all this? Why did it all feel familiar?

He looked up to see the Nightmare staring down- down! - at him with blood red eyes. Toothless felt fear within him, something he rarely felt. The Nightmare spoke, his voice completely monstrous. "My master ordered me to leave no survivors. So, I will show no mercy in enjoying a little snack." That was when Toothless ran.

He continued to whimper in fear and pain as he ran. He looked behind him to take a final glimpse at the carnage… and noticed his tail was whole! His heart raced as he realized he wasn't just acting like a hatchling- he was a hatchling! What in the moons was going on here? What did all this mean? He cried out for an unknown friend as sinister woods closed in around him. After what seemed like hours running through the creepy forest, he tripped and fell off a short cliff. He shrieked in terror as his little body was thrown on rocks and bumpy ground. When he reached the bottom, he hit it head-first, blacking out.

He awoke.

Woozily, he stood up trying to recall what happened in that dream. Wait, that felt too real to be a dream. Could it be… a memory? "You okay?" someone said behind him. Surprised, Toothless whirled to see a worried Stormfly. "You look like you had the worst nightmare of your life." Toothless hesitated for a moment. "I did." Stormfly stared at her friend, puzzled. "Except it all felt too real…" Toothless continued as he started to explain what had happened.

(A/N: This story will be probably what HTTYD 3 will cover. But until then, this might be as close as I can get with my prediction.)
