Takes place a few minutes after the epilogue of CWP

A while later (it could have been mere minutes, it could have been hours) Tessa and Jem broke apart, wrapped in each other's warm embrace.

"Tessa," he murmured, cupping her face in his hands and planting a light kiss on her nose. "There is something I must tell you."

She opened her eyes and stared up at him, her eyes alight with wonder. Was this her happy ending delivered to her on a silver platter? "Tell me what?"

"I hope this is good news to you. The runes the Brotherhood placed on me have prevented me from ever aging. The opposite of the yin fen, which kept me from living. I am immortal, like you, Tessa."

Tessa had to ask him to repeat himself, unable to believe the words coming out of his mouth. But how could she doubt the sincerity in his eyes? He would not trick her into believing something so impossible, then crush her hopes, would he?

When she didn't answer him, unable to accept the statement that was too good to be true, Jem began to look hurt, and he disentangled himself from her embrace. She held tight to him, not trusting herself to be able to hold herself up after the astonishing bombshell he had dropped.

"You cannot- will not- die?" she whispered, a snippet of hope beginning to flutter beneath her breast. She was not ready to nurture it until she was sure. She was not sure she could bare to be crushed all over again.

Will…

"No," Jem said, doubt beginning to dim the excitement in his warm brown eyes.

A huge smile spread across Tessa's face, and Jem could not help but compare it to the sun breaking through a thick barrier of dark clouds, decimating the dreary rain and fog and leaving a rainbow in its wake. "Then you will not ever leave me? I will not be alone again?"

"No, Tessa," Jem breathed, gathering her to him again, his worried soothed. He buried his face in the junction between her neck and shoulder, breathing in her scent that was distinctly Tessa. "You will never be alone again. I will always be by your side."
