A Helping Paw

"Oh, that Potter!" Lily Evans slammed into the Gryffindor common room.

Remus looked up from his book. Lily stormed over to his table and slammed her bag down.

"Something wrong?" Remus asked.

"It's that bloody friend of yours!" Lily shouted, "James Potter, bloody jerk!"

"What's wrong? What did he do?" Remus set down his book.

"I was talking to Mary about how I was disappointed by my potions grade, and he overheard and said, 'with looks like those, you don't need to be smart.' Then me winked at me! Can you believe him! So bloody cheeky!" Lily sat next to Remus.

"I'm sorry he's so inconsiderate," Remus smiled.

Lily forced a half-smile, "Thanks."

"Can… can I talk to you about something Lily?" Remus asked.

Lily cocked her eyebrow and her head, "Sure I guess."

"Can you keep a secret?"

"Yeah."

"Can you promise you won't freak out?"

"I guess so."

Remus took a deep breath.

"Well, you know how I leave campus a lot, and how I often look sickly?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I'm a werewolf."

Lily looked at him speculatively.

"You're joking, right?"

Remus shook his head, "No."

"Oh my God. Oh my God. Remus, that's… oh my God. You could kill someone! How… there's so many problems with werewolves! Remus!" Lily screamed.

"See! You said you wouldn't freak out! You're freaking out!"

"I thought it would be something like, 'I've got a crush on someone,' or 'I cheated on an exam"! Third year stuff!"

"Lily!"

She ceased her ranting.

"This is why no one knows," Remus continued in hushed tones, "except you, James, Sirius, and Peter. It's that prejudice. Listen. Outside a wolf, inside a lamb, no one sees me as I am."

He placed a hand on Lily's where she laid it on the table. She recoiled slightly from his touch, and Remus withdrew his hand.

"If I offend, I will withdraw. This wolf," he raised an eyebrow, "wants to lend a helping paw. A demeanor that's fierce, I'm sure," he smirked. Lily despite her judgment, giggled.

"But a nature benign. I had no choice in my design," Remus shrugged his small shoulders in his tattered robes.

"My big bad rep gets stuck in my craw. This wolf wants to lend a helping paw."

Remus became bolder as Lily seemed slightly more at ease, "I defy classification, few examples in the books. I relate to your frustration when others judge you by your looks," he smoothed Lily's hair behind her ear, and she smiled.

"Someone like you, perceptive and smart, has to know what's in my heart," he took her hand and pressed it to his heart. She let it stay there for a moment before removing it.

"Bring out my best, forgive each flaw. This wolf wants to lend a helping paw," Remus extended a hand to Lily. She looked at it for a minute before taking it.

"I need a friend, Lily. Will you be my friend?"

She smiled, "Yes, Remus. I'll be your friend."
