I should have known one cannot keep
A gull that once soared over waves.
But I was blind, and so must reap
All that I sowed, from all the days
That went by while she smiled in silence -
And in silence continued to fade.
I did not see until too late; and hence
The gilded bars of her cage I made:
From love, from silence, ignorance and blindness,
And the affection given to a bird with clipped wings
By a captor - or the care I thought was kindness,
With which a puppeteer pulls his puppet's strings.
