Chapter 1

It's not like Demons fall out of the Sky.

"Isn't this a bit much?" I let out a sigh dragging the bag of what I assumed were catalysts behind me. A part of me wondered why they sent someone like me to do something like this.

The more I thought about it the more absurd it was, it wasn't like demons fell from the sky or anything like that, not only that but everyone was glaring at me...which made sense considering that I was carrying a bag nearly twice my size.

"They really should have sent someone else..." My feet dragged through the dusty trail passing every sign until a reached a building with the large letters painted across them.

"Finally an Inn." I took a deep breath, I was out in the middle of nowhere with no map or guide to even lead me to use the catalysts that I had. Right before I stepped into the inn I realized something however. I patted my pants for a moment checking my wallet. "Ah, I don't actually have any money left..." I slowly closed my eyes letting those words slowly sink into my brain.

I sighed slowly stepping back walking away from the inn and back onto the road, it was going to be nighttime soon, and I doubted anyone from the town wanted some bum with a giant bag lying around in the middle of the road.

"I guess I can find a nice tree to sleep under..." I groaned as I dragged myself further across the town towards the outskirts. Despite how dusty and plain the surrounding area was, I did manage to find a small tree with a river nearby to place my things. As I sat down my bag I took a deep breath as I shoved my hand into the large sack.

"I really probably shouldn't put my food with this sort of thing." I groaned as I pulled out a large pack of dried meat and crackers. Despite my best efforts I was actually running low on food, and I doubted I was even part way to my destination. I casually bit off a slab of the meat as I filled my canteen with the running water of a nearby river. I honestly wasn't the biggest fan of camping or anything of the sort, the fact that I had to do it just showed how mismatched I was for the job at hand.

"Eh, whatever...I guess complaining about it now is pointless." I gave a small sigh leaning my head against the tree relaxing my body ever so slightly. At the very least the breeze was good and I wasn't hot. "Whatever the problem is, I'll sleep for a bit and wake up later."

I laughed as my consciousness slowly started to fade as I drifted off the sleep.

There was no dreams, rather just a short time as my eyes slowly opened. The orange sun that had been hanging above me had vanished and what replaced it was the night sky filled with stars. I shrugged, while I wished it was morning I only had myself to blame for falling asleep when the sun was still up.

"Damn, I don't have a watch or anything to tell the time." I groaned sitting up looking at the stars in the sky. "Well, at the very least the stars are pretty." They were so pretty in fact, it seemed like one was slowly shooting towards me. It took me a moment to realize that it was actually rather close...and getting closer and closer...

"Eh?" My body flinched, I didn't have time to react as I felt my body being hit by something that felt like a sack of potatoes...if the potatoes were some kind of meteor.

The moment I was struck, my body skid a few meters away, my back grinding against the dirt next to me. "Gah!" I groaned in pain as my body finally stopped skidding against the dirt my eyes slowly opening.

I looked down, noticing that what I thought was a meteor or a sack of potatoes was actually a person. At least I assumed they were a person, they had a rather petite body, but that wasn't what stuck out to me the most. "B-Bunny ears?" I wondered for a moment if the person that lied unmoving on my chest was some kind of moon rabbit.

"Oy, hey...are you okay?" I asked nudging the person, they had been completely knocked out. However I took note how slender they were, and despite how small they were I also noticed a few lumps rubbing against my chest. "I guess she's a girl."

I flipped the person over, finally getting a good look of their face. It was cut and bruised rather badly, as if she had been in a fight and was thrown somewhere else. I also took note of how stupid she looked, before my body started to shake and my nose itched.

"Huh? Wait..." I frowned examining the woman more. "Don't tell me she's an actually demon..."

Due to my magic, I was able to both sense and smell demons and the catalyst used to summon them. Of course, I needed to have that ability if I was ever going to make a pact with them, however this was just bizarre to a crazy degree. Demons just don't fall out of the sky...

"Aw, I think I overdid it, I hoped I didn't kill her. I really wanted to play with her some more~"

I flinched as I heard a voice coming from the nearby trees. I groaned, I was tempted to just leave, but I had a feeling I probably couldn't do that. Even then, demon or not I couldn't just leave a girl broken and unconscious like that...even if she was a bit goofy looking.

I placed the girl over my shoulders as I picked up my bag. I had a feeling if I went through the forest I'd probably end up being caught. My eyes then wandered to the nearby river as I groaned.

"Mom made sure nothing in this bag can be affected by the stuff outside...so it should be fine..." I slowly inched my way to the water before diving in, keeping the girl and the bag above the water as I let the river carry us downstream.

The entire ordeal was kind of stupid. I didn't really have a reason to do what I did besides the fact that whatever was able to mess up a demon probably wasn't going to be good news for anyone else involved. That, and I didn't mind getting wet and I was headed that direction any way.

After a moment of floating I suddenly felt the current starting to pick up. It wasn't just a little either, I realized that I wasn't actually able to swim in the opposite direction any longer, at least not while carrying both the sack and the girl.

I peeked my head above the water as my eye twitched. I must not have realized exactly what the stream was leading to and why, since it seemed that I was looking over the edge of what appeared to be a miniature waterfall.

"S-shit, how did I not notice that?" I groaned, I quickly turned my body trying my best to swim back up. In normal conditions, even with the harsh current I would have been able to, however as long as I was carrying the girl and the bag...

"Wait a minute, I can just throw her and the bag to the side a-" It seemed that my brain started to work a bit too slowly as me, the girl and my bag went over the side of the waterfall into the pool of water below.

I winced as I hit the surface of the water, the sound of the nearby waterfall was almost deafening. Despite all that, I hadn't let go of either the girl or my bag despite how rocky the whole situation was. Though the fact that there also wasn't any rocks on the bottom was also lucky too.

I took a deep breath as I swam to land, tossing both the girl and my bag onto the grass as I crawled out coughing up a bunch of water. I looked over to the girl, it seemed despite everything she didn't get any water in her lungs. Not only that, but there was something off. Even though she was in the water, most of her clothes were completely dried. As if the water had moved or slipped around her.

"I guess it's a demon thing." I sighed quickly wiping my hair and body off. I looked back up to the small waterfall that we had just fell down. I doubted anyone that was chasing us would check over the waterfall. We were probably going to be safe until morning.

"Man...talk about a pain. Though if she is a demon maybe she could help me with my problem..."

I ultimately decided to dry my clothes and wait until morning. It wasn't like I was sleepy anyway due to the long nap I took and it I doubted I could close my eyes and leave myself defenseless. I wasn't much of a fighter without making pacts, and even then it would take a few before I would feel confident to call myself even confident in a fight.

As the sun slowly started to rise I noticed the girl slowly starting to move, her ears twitching and her body shifting. It was a far cry to the unsettling stillness from the night before. "Hey, are you alive?" It was a stupid question to ask considering the situation.

"Ugh..." The girl finally spoke shifting her body ever so slightly. Her odd ears covered her face due to them drooping slightly as she shook her head as shook her head sitting up. At that moment our eyes locked as we stared at one another.

"EEK don't kill me! Don't cut off my ears, or rip apart my skin!" The girl struggled to get up only to instantly collapse back on to the ground. "O-Ow..." It was pretty clear that she hadn't full recovered, even if she was a demon I wouldn't be surprised if some of her bones were broken or something. In other words, she was probably completely defenseless unless she had some sort of magic or something.

"Don't move around, you were kind of sent flying and landed on me...after that." I stopped for a moment, I kind of didn't want to tell her that we went over the side of a waterfall because of my dimwittedness.

The girl scanned me, her gaze seemingly piercing me as she let out a rather odd smile. "Well, at least you're kind of hot, so I can't be too angry."

I remained silent, I was happy for the compliment, but I highly doubted it was the time or the place for that sort of thing. "Thanks, but don't you think we should get introductions out of the way first?" I implied as I cleared my voice before speaking, "my name is Frei Verbinden."

I was rather blunt with my comment as the girl looked at me before giving a rather goofy expression. "I'm Lamy, or rather a Lamy. You must have heard of me from the nine demon gates?"

I vaguely recalled the name, but I quickly dismissed it, that wasn't what we were supposed to talk about anyway. "Listen, if you're a demon I have to ask you a couple of questions, I know there is a nearby town, but we are going to have to backtrack a bit to reach there." As tempting as it was to keep moving forward I at least wanted to be near a location just in case something bad came up.

Without warning I picked up my bag before lifting Lamy from off of the ground as she made an odd sound.

"Ah, being carried like this! Huhuhuhuh! It's like I'm a bride being whisked off to her honeymoon by some hot guy~" My eye twitched as she said that, it seemed that she had some rather odd thoughts.

Regardless I slung my bag over my back as we slowly made our way through the forest. The trip itself was filled with relative silence, however I noticed Lamy constantly glancing at my sack, her eyes narrowing with every step we took. "So, um what's in the bag?"

"That is actually what I wanted to ask you about..."

"What? How would I know what was in your bag?" Lamy frowned, once again she made a good point. However it was pointless to talk about it in the middle of the woods like we were, I wanted at least get to a better location, preferable one that wasn't next to waterfall.

After we got close enough to the town we stopped as I set both Lamy and my bag down as I sat across from her. It was the first time I took note of what kind of clothes she was wearing, she was wearing some sort of weird lab-coat and an odd tie. Perhaps it was because I was born almost in the middle of nowhere but I never could get fashion.

"So, what did you want to ask me about?" Lamy frowned as I slowly lifted my hand and shoved it into the bag before pulling something out.

It was like a mutated bird talon that had patches of feathers among other things attached to it. There was no doubt that it belong to some sort of monster or demon of sort, but it was far too small...almost human like in a way. "Can I ask you who this belonged to?"

Lamy looked at it for a moment before her eyes widened. "Ah, this is..." she stopped herself before looking at me. "W-where did you get this?"

It seemed that she knew something about it, which was rather lucky for me considering that I would have been stuck wandering around the entire world if it wasn't for that fact. "My mom gave them to me before I left, she gave me a bunch of catalyst to summon demons." I pointed out as Lamy frowned, she quickly snatched the item from my hand examining it further.

"A-and you're saying you have a bunch of body parts like this?"

"They aren't body parts...well technically they are, they are catalyst." I pointed out. "A catalyst is something used to revive or summon a demon for a certain amount of time, they could either be used once to summon a dead demon at full power for a moment of time or be used near the location in which a demon was born or died to properly revive them. In a weaker state of course, you don't need to know the specifics really..."

There were a few other limitations and caveats that I couldn't bother telling. Besides if Lamy was a living demon those caveats didn't pertain to her at all.

Lamy tilted her head, clearly confused by what I was going on about. Regardless it seemed that she at least understood what I wanted from her. "This is a body part of one of the nine-demon gates that were killed two years ago, I don't know what you are going to do with it, but I don't want anything to do with it."

"Huh? Didn't you say that you were a part of the nine demon whatever? Why don't you want to help out with this?" She had quite a bit of pride in her former title just a few minutes ago, now she wanted to act like she never said it in the first place.

"F-forget I ever said that...j-just drop me off at the nearest town." Lamy frowned as she lifted both her arms, I could tell she was shaking ever so slightly as I groaned.

"Listen here, it's not like I want to do this or anything. If it were up to me my mom would be the one talking to you and I'd be at home doing nothing. But she insisted that I do this, besides I was the one that saved you so you owe me." I stated, I wasn't above guilt-tripping a girl, especially as one as funny looking as Lamy.

"Cruel, far too cruel, are you sure you are even human?" Lamy gave a whimper as fake tears filled her eyes. I groaned, it seemed that she was one of 'those' kind of girls.

"Alright, I was also going to a-" I stopped my statement as I heard rustling in the trees. Lamy fell completely silent as well as we both held our breath not daring to make a noise.

"Can't believe the boss wants us to look around for her..." A voice stated as another replied.

"Yeah, knowing the boss she probably killed her with that hit...there probably isn't anything left!" The voices laughed, both of them sounded male compared to the voice from the previous night that was strictly female.

"T-they came looking for me..." Lamy whispered

"Who?" I whispered back as I picked up both Lamy and my bag heading into the nearby bushes It probably wasn't going to be the best hiding spot, but for the situation it would have to do.

"I-I don't know, they are just a bunch of weird people in white clothing and they attacked me. They destroyed everything I was working on before and haven't stopped chasing me since...yesterday was a really bad day too." Lamy couldn't help but let out a sigh as my eye twitched.

'White uniforms..." I closed my eyes, that sort of clothing made me believe that they could have been apart of the church. It went without saying that churches and demons did not mix well at all, and despite the clean reputation the church had they were actually quite underhanded and shady. "Listen, can you fight?" I asked Lamy bluntly as the bunny demon glared at me.

"What, me? In my condition, of course not. Besides, in a situation like this, it's up to the guy to protect the girl, not the other way around!" Lamy pointed out, I honestly couldn't argue with that statement...however there was one problem.

"Even though I'm a mage I don't have any magic yet..." I stated bluntly as Lamy eye twitched. It was apparent it was taking all of her not to scream or shout at the top of her lungs.

"W-what the hell? Even if you are kind of cute trying to save someone when you can't defend yourself is bad right?" Lamy pointed the obvious fact out as I noticed the pushes starting to rustle even more, it was only a matter of time before the people who were looking for us would locate where we were hiding.

"Lamy, right? Have you heard about pacts?"

"...What are you talking about?" Lamy questioned as I shook my head.

"Listen, the only thing I need you to say is 'I want to make a pact' and I'll take care of those two guys...well if you have any useful abilities that is." I pointed out as Lamy frowned.

I was admittedly forcing her hand, and to be fair there was a chance the two guys looking for us weren't even hostile, but a part of me wanted to check something out myself.

"F-fine, 'I want to make a pact.' there is that all you need to do?" Lamy stated as I shook my head.

Well, there is one more part." Pacts could only be made by exchanging blood, saliva or other fluids, and since I really didn't have a knife on me to exchange our blood.

I grabbed Lamy's cheeks as she flinched slightly. Without even giving her a warning I shoved my tongue into her mouth as her eyes widened. It didn't take long as I slipped it out, leaving the bunny demon speechless. "Alright, the pact should be complete."

I wiped my mouth before looking at my hands. I did feel slightly heavier for some reason, but I honestly didn't know if it was because I did something some embarrassing randomly or not.

"So what is your magic anyway?" I whispered as Lamy face turned a bright red.

"Blegh, bah...it's um..." She was stuttering over her words as she was cut off.

"Oy, is someone there?!" We both winced as the voices were getting closer. There was much I can do besides just go out there.

"Hey, you wait here...I'll check it out." I stated, though it seemed Lamy was still in a haze after what I had just done. I didn't know if it was just a girl thing, or if it was just something that demons did...maybe a combination of both.

I walked out, the moment I did I noticed two knights instantly turning their attention towards me. They were in full plated armor with helmets removing all sense of humanity from them. Not only that, but the marking on the armor removed all doubt that they were a part of the church.

"Hey guys?" I smiled a bit nervously as the two knights scanned me. Perhaps since I wasn't the person that they were looking for they would be willing to just overlook me and continue on their way, it wasn't like I looked suspicious. If anyone else had saw me they probably would have thought I was just a normal person.

"Eh, what do you want?" One of the knights were rather blunt as I scratched the back of my head.

"Oh nothing, was just looking around and noticed the two of you..." I replied as the two knights glanced at one another

"Well, since you are standing there. We are wondering if you had seen a bunny eared girl, she may look cute, but I can assure you that she is a dangerous demon that needs to be stopped." Honestly, the fact that they were willing to tell me that much made me feel a bit guilty about having to lie to them.

"Sorry, I don't think I've seen someone as dangerous as that." I replied, perhaps there was a chance that I would get out of the situation without actually having to fight anyone.

"What are you doing, hurry up and kick their ass my love!" I flinched as I heard Lamy shout from the bushes behind me. I turned my head to see the top part of her body out of the leaves her face having a permeant blush on it. I didn't know what was worse, the fact she blew my chance to handle the situation peacefully or that she called me her love.

"W-wait, that's the demon!" The knight stuttered as the other one glared at me, at least that is what I assumed he did considering he was still wearing a helmet.

"Poor bastard, the demon must have put him under some kind of charm spell..."

"D-don't make assumptions like that!" I snapped as both of them drew their blade causing me to take a step back. They didn't seem like they were mages or anything of the sort, if Lamy really was a demon and I had made a pact with her then it should be simple.

"Ignore the boy, get the demon!" The men snapped as Lamy let out a small cry before hiding back behind the bushes. The men were about to run past me as I took a deep breath.

"Hey wa-" I grabbed one of their shoulders, the moment I did the man slipped and fell. No, it was far more than that, the moment he fell his blade slipped out of his hand impaling itself on a nearby tree. That wasn't the only thing that happened, half of his armor just slipped off.

"Eh?" I didn't know if it was my reaction or the knight's however either way everyone was surprised.

"O-Oy, what the hell man! Didn't you make sure your armor was on properly before we left?!" His friend let out a shout as the man quickly scrambled to his feet.

"O-Of course I did, that boy must have some sort of magic or something." The naked knight pointed to me as the remaining guard turned his attention away from Lamy and towards me.

"Doing something like that, I'm going to have to knock you out I'm afraid." The knight lifted the hilt of his sword rushing towards me. Once again I lifted my arms to defend myself, not realizing I touched the gauntlet.

The moment I touched it, his sword also flung itself out of his arms and vanishing into the horizon. Not only that, but most of his armor fell off of his body as I shifted my weight letting the man land on top of his comrade.

"Huhuhuhu! See that? That is the power of the Slippery curse...though I don't know why you have it." Lamy poked her head out once she realized that we were safe.

"W-what kind of lame ass magic is this!" I snapped. I expected something with more firepower, and while she was the first demon I made a pact with, I still wanted something cooler as my first ability I inherited. "Bah, forget about it!" I pushed such a idiotic thought in the back of my head as I grabbed both my bag and Lamy before running away.

"H-Hey wait!" The knights called out to me as I ignored them running as far away as possible.

"I-I see, I guess if you are with me you would be in a rush to finish what we started with that kiss...leaving a girl hanging like that is bad." Lamy held her cheeks as I grumbled. I guess in a way, I was proven wrong about demons. They actually do fall from the sky, it's just best that you don't make a pact with ones that do.
