This is set after Edward leaves Bella in New Moon, Jasper never left though.

"Bella" Jasper whispered quietly.
"Hmmmm" Bella replied groggily, having just woken up from a bizarre peaceful sleep.
"Bella, its Jasper." Bella shot up in bed quickly. Was this a dream? Was this a cruel joke, because it certainly wasn't funny? Edw- he had left Bella only days before and she had already felt like killing herself more than once, but she couldn't do that, because of Charlie, it would break his heart. So Jasper Hale, her best friend… ex- best friend, Alice's husband being her was a shock and a pain. Bella had been in so much pain in the 5 days that Edward was gone.
"Jasper" Bella said quietly "please give me a minute to clean up, sit down; I'll be back in a second."
Bella left the room quietly, painfully, Jasper looking at her sadly, thinking, what had we done to the beautiful, vibrant, Bella? Her emotions were one of such pain, sadness and inequality he himself felt ready to cry, how was she living?
Bella came in moments later. Jasper's thinking, taking him 15 minutes to process it himself.
"Jasper I want you to think of the worst pain imaginable and project it to me."Bella asked, almost pleading.
"Bella I'm not sure if that's a good ide- Jasper please I'm begging you please do it." Jasper unwillingly complied, he couldn't deny this girl anything, and after all he had put her in this pain.
"Oh and Jasper please don't blame yourself for this think about this you were in a room with 5 other thirsty vampires, the bloodlust all together would have sent anyone of you at me. Please now my request?" Bella said.
Japer thought over this for a minute, he had never thought about that, how come nobody else had? Not even Alice, his darling wife had thought about that before she left him to go with the other to Denali. But as she wished he sent her the pain of becoming a vampire, being heart broken by his wife, being bitten a million times by ravenous angry newborns, Edwards pain of leaving Bella everything he could think of that went with pain and sent it to her. All of the emotions crippled him and should have devastated Bella in to pieces, but there she stood not really feeling any of the emotions he was giving her, not a shield was blocking it out, she should have been on the ground in heart wrenching sobs, instead there she stood.
"Now you know I've been through much worse pain Jasper" Bella said and with that she left.
In that moment Jasper realized Bella had already been broken in to pieces, shattered beyond what a human girl so caring, loving, brave, accepting like Bella should have to bear. She shouldn't have to go through this he thought, he pledged to himself and to Bella that he would always be there for her through her heartbreak and her sadness he would help her get through even if he was hurting inside too.
