Bright April sunshine streamed through the windows. On the grounds, the forest's leaves seemed to sparkle. Groups of three or four strolled on the grounds. Splashes could be seen on the lake. Two long, pink tentacles emerged from the water. Danielle watched it all from the astronomy tower. From there, she imagined she was watching TV. Everything seemed separate from her, like she couldn't be part of it.
It had been three weeks since the Chamber. Three weeks since she'd lost memories of her childhood. In a way, she longed to see her adopted family, the – oh, what was their names? – oh, yeah – the Smiths again. They almost seemed like figments of dreams.
Are you okay? Harry's voice echoed in her head. Danielle jumped. Then she remembered. She could share thoughts with her twin.
I was broadcasting again, wasn't I? she asked sheepishly.
Yeah. He was silent for a minute. Do you want to come down to the lake with Ron, Neville, Hermione, and me?
Danielle shook her head before she remembered that Harry couldn't see her. No thanks.
You're going to have to stop moping sometime. You can't just stay up there all the time.
The black-haired girl sighed. He was right. There was no use wasting her time in the astronomy tower when there was schoolwork to be done. She still had makeup work from when she'd been Petrified.
That's the Dani I know.
I've got to stop broadcasting.
She stood and dusted off her robes. It almost felt like she was dusting off some type of old her. Maybe she was. She realized with a jolt how different she was from when she'd first stepped inside the castle. When she was eleven, she'd been wide-eyed, confident, and a girl with a plan. Now, her plan hadn't gone wrong, but it wasn't going – well – as planned.
As she approached Ravenclaw tower, she decided that she would go outside and do work. The fresh air would do her good. There was a spot just by the lake that was absolutely perfect when it was warm.
It was in the Entrance Hall when she encountered Ginny. The younger girl seemed nervous. They locked eyes. The redhead started to shake. Her face was ashen. Ginny turned to go back outside.
"Wait, Ginny," Danielle called. She set her books and bag on the ground next to the wall. She approached Ginny. In all of the three weeks after the Chamber, she had not spoken a word to Danielle. Then again, Danielle hadn't even tried speaking to Ginny.
They spent an entire minute staring at each other. Danielle couldn't think of anything to say. Finally, Ginny spoke. "Dani, I'm really sorry – I didn't mean anything – Not against you – I'm really sor-"
"Ginny, don't," Danielle interrupted. "I'm sorry for not noticing sooner."
"You haven't done anything wrong."
"Yeah, I have. I've been too wrapped up in myself over the last year. I never noticed that anything was wrong."
Ginny hunched her shoulders and sighed. She straightened. Her brown eyes seemed more at ease. "That still doesn't make me less sorry. I still am."
"I guess we both need to stop feeling so sorry."
You seem more cheerful, Harry commented.
You were listening in!
Please, you've done it enough. You and Ginny have been moping too much. Ron and I were actually taking bets on when you'd finally talk. This means I owe Ron five Sickles…
Danielle couldn't help it. She laughed.
"What's so funny?" Ginny inquired.
She tried to quell her laughter. "Our brothers were making bets on when we'd finally speak!" Dani finally managed to choke out.
Ginny giggled. Soon, she too dissolved into laughter.
