The List
Prologue
Darkness and the soft whisper of the wind were the only things that caught my attention on that dreadful night. Everywhere I looked I saw people dressed in black dresses and black tuxedos; each person held a sad but grateful face as they stared into the open coffin. I felt my tears roll down my face as I stared at the man who had saved us all, the person who never gave up to prove us all innocent of murder. Of a crime so hated now that we know who was behind it all along.
His face was lifeless as I looked at Link and at Peach and everyone who were there. I was called upon suddenly, I turned my head toward the person and Luigi walked off the podium. I walked on it with a brave face, one that I would've never guessed that I would wear on a funeral. I looked down at the paper that was organized for me to say. I just pushed the paper aside and everyone gave low whispers.
I looked at his lifeless body and my hands turned into fists as I started off by saying, "I welcome you all here, and I also thank you for taking time out of your schedules to come here. Tonight is a night that I think no one's going to forget anytime soon, and I hope that no one ever does forget why we're here. We're not here to mourn for the dead, we're not here to be sad, but we are here to thank."
I paused, I glanced at everyone and their attention was on me. I took out a small black book with a white cross on it and I opened it to the first page.
"Through these events that led up to where we are now… I-I wrote down everything that happened. I wrote where we stood those few months ago and I wrote down everything everyone has said and done. Including our friend, Pit… who lies here tonight with us. For his soul is listening and I know that you're all here to thank him just like I am."
I heard the soft cry of Samus who was glaring at the ground. I sighed and said, "this was the first thing I ever wrote down and I think it sums this situation… 'Sometimes, when people meet others, their destinies cross and intertwine. But for our friend Pit, when he met all of us, he never knew that he'd be confronted by a cold blooded killer.'"
Link gave me an encouraging smile as I whispered, "Pit… you were the one who told me that destinies cross each other and you told me everything that had happened during the killing spree. Now if no one wishes to know what really happened, leave. But if you wish to hear then meet me in the mansion and I'll tell you exactly what I wrote down and how the mystery unraveled."
I got off the podium and was met with a large crowd of Smashers; no one had left. We all had faces that were tear stained, hair that was too messy to tame, and some of us couldn't even sleep after we found out the murderer. We all walked to the mansion that laid in ruins now, and I sat down where our living room used to be.
"Roy, you really know what happened?"
"Yep. I wrote it all down."
"Why?"
I smiled at that question and replied, "if I never did write this down, then Pit and I would've never became friends."
Silence fell over the ruins as I drew out my small black book. I flipped to the second page and a few tears landed on the page. I gave a quick glance and saw everyone seated around me and that made me feel better as I began reading a tale of murder, mystery and an undeniable truth that would eventually be our downfall.
