Based on kxlance's tumblr post:

ok but pining!keith who has to lead voltron temporarily and assigns himself and lance do missions together so that he can get closer to him

"lance you come with me" "

again? but it's the 10th time i come with you?"

"...so what? you're my right hand man we gotta stick together?" *nervous laughter*

"..."

And Lance? He totally doesn't mind. Like, at all.

It's nice to be around Keith, for sure, but he acts like he minds quite a bit, and always protests a little. (Not enough to actually change Keith's mind about their upcoming mission, he certainly doesn't want that to happen.) It's because he doesn't want to be obvious about his stupid feelings and ruin this carefully built friendship with Keith. So he shields it with words like 'teamwork', 'rivalry', and 'comradery'.

Keith has a point, though, Lance thinks. They work well together.

On their missions, Lance becomes 95% of Keith's impulse control. On the other hand, Keith has this amazing ability to pull together a half-decent, well. To call it a plan would be inaccurate, because Keith doesn't really think about it enough to be considered a plan, but you get the gist of it. With Keith, it's always a vague idea in a life-and-death situation, but no matter what, he's always able to make it work.

It's almost scary.

The point is, Lance makes sure they don't encounter any trouble, but when they do, Keith's reckless nature gets them out of it, no matter the odds. They trust each other implicitly, they anticipate each other's movements, and they bicker a lot, sure, but they always find a compromise that works even better than any of their original plans.

And all of this, is what makes them work as a duo.

So it's not all that ridiculous, that it keeps happening and happening, that it's always the two of them are paired up, even after they find Shiro.

And, somewhere along the line - around their 47th team mission together, not that he had been counting - Lance stops fake-complaining.

If the universe gave him this one thing, then who is he to defy?
