Disclaimer: I don't own Saiyuki. I only wish I owned Hakkai!

A/N: I must mention that I am mostly working off of the anime Saiyuki. I know the sequence of events is different in the manga.

Staring into the rain, Cho Hakkai remembered.

- Cho Gonou stared at the dying demon, the last of the Hundred-Eyes clan that had taken his Kanan away. His arm was still buried past the wrist in the other's gut.

"So, you truly have become a demon like us!"

How had he killed this one without any weapons? He pulled his arm back with a sickening squelch and held his bloody hands up before him.

Claws tipped each finger.

"AhhhhhhhhhhAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!"

He reeled away from the corpse, screaming in denial and terror. Then his screams took on a new note as a blinding pain that had nothing to do with the dreadful wound in his stomach ripped through him. He crashed into a wall clutching his head, feeling pointed tips on his previously rounded ears, feeling them growing out into the long elven ears of a demon. His body was afire from the inside out as he changed.

Not this - he had expected death but not THIS!

Cho Gonou's teeth gashed his lip as his blunt canines took on a keen sharpness. Reeling, staggering through the halls, the shine of a mirror caught his eye. He slammed his clawed hands on either side of it; the plaster cracked under his growing strength. He stared at his bloody visage, familiarity lost with the demonic ears adorning his head. Even as he stared, his still functioning eye went slitted and cat-like. A pattern began to appear on his skin, dark leaf shapes winding around his arms.

He screamed again and spun away. His maddened gaze fell on one of the bodies sprawled out in the hall.

A triple ear clip on one round ear.

A limiter.

He all but tore the ear off the body getting the thing free, hands clumsy with shock and unfamiliar with claws. He shook so badly it took him three tries to get it attached to his ear. And then -

A receding, a shrinking, a horrible sensation of LOSS. The wound in his belly began to bleed afresh as the limiter blocked part of his new demonic healing powers. But Cho Gonou sobbed in relief as his hands lost the claws, his ears the points, his teeth the fangs. He was dying, bleeding to death, and he didn't care. He continued to stumble through the place, searching half-blinded for an exit to this charnel of his own making. At last he crashed through a door and out into the rainy night.

He did not know how long he stumbled through the trees away from the scene of it all. At last though the blood loss became enough to send him to the ground. He lay on his face in the rain, waiting for death.

Let it end. Let it end here.

Someone was speaking. He opened his eye, saw a curtain of blood. Blood? No, red hair, red eyes. A man leaning over him, cigarette hanging out of his mouth. But he could no longer focus, and oblivion claimed him. -

"Hey." Gojou poked Hakkai in the shoulder, causing the little dragon draped there to hiss. "What're you thinking about?"

Cho Hakkai's face creased into its trademark smile.

"Oh, nothing much."
