Timing is everything. Even in taking over the world.
The moment of success is fleeting and the simplest plans can easily go astray easily. And Voldermort's plan was anything but simple. He wanted to live forever and the Immortal Soul spell would do just that for him. It was a complicated spell requiring four massive sacrifices, one week apart leading up to Soul's Night; what he mistakenly assumed was an ancient variation of All Hollow's Eve.
If the dark lord had studied the history bit more, instead of the calendar, he would have known differently. Halloween is a modern holiday based on ancient believes; believes celebrated long before man knew how draw boxes around the days and divide the seasons into years. The true Soul's Night has nothing to do with day of the month, but the rising of the moon, the tenth new moon after winter solace.
But then, Voldermort wasn't known for thorough planning.
It was October 10 when he performed the first part of the ritual and a small muggle village was destroyed in an orgy of destruction. As his Death Eaters played with the villagers, Voldermort siphoned off the captives' life force to feed the spell.
Picking through the wreckage the next day, the muggle authorities were baffled and thought they had a cult of psycho killers on the loose and warned everyone to lock their doors and report any suspicious activity immediately. However, this did not stop it from happening again the next week and the county side exploded into panic. There was finger pointing, false arrests, suspicion, paranoia, and in one sad case, a destroyed barn and a flock of well oiled chickens.
By the fourth week, the paranoia was thick enough to cut with a knife and the Death Eaters had partied and pillaged themselves into exhaustion, and were in desperate need of a vacation.
However, unknown to Voldermort, his amateur meddling was raising power, not power that he could use, but power all the same. The power called to the darkness between this world and the next, full of hungry things that had spent an eternity trying to gain entrance to this world.
The fourth and finally sacrifice took place on All Hollow's Eve, the night when the barriers between this world and the next are historically the thinnest. To screams and moans, Voldermort finished casting the spell and waited.
He did not wait long.
