Emily sighed and pulled open the door of a local coffee shop. Standing alone in the doorway, she looked around anxiously as a dozen eyes turned to stare at her. She met each pair of eyes in turn, finally finding the ones she was searching for. Emily let the door close behind her and she hurried between the tables to meet her partner.
"Hey Em," Matt stood up as she made her way towards him and wrapped an arm around her waist.
"Hey yourself…" Matt grinned and planted a gentle kiss on her cheek. "Sorry, I'm late."
"No, it's okay," Matt assured her. He put his hands on her hips and sat down on the couch, pulling her down next to him. She leaned against him, their bodies fitting together perfectly.
"So, how was your class today?" He asked.
"Um, fine. I guess," Emily sighed, "Well, there are some…interesting people in my class this time. A few have potential… A few…" she cleared her throat, "don't."
Matt laughed, "Well, we will have to give them a lesson. A little role playing, maybe?" he murmured into her hair before kissing the top of her head.
"Role playing?" Emily giggled, "Why does that sound more like it's for us then for them?"
Matt feigned an innocent look, "What?" Emily laughed again and finally began to relax in Matt's arms. The stress of the past five days had taken its toll on the couple and they were both exhausted. Four long negotiations, plus a court date had made for one very long week.
Emily sighed, content, as Matt tightened his arms around her. The eclectic coffee shop was a favorite place of Emily's to people watch. As they watched the other patrons, she and Matt enjoyed a comfortable silence. Matt brought his right hand to her head and gently smoothed her hair back. When he couldn't resist any longer, he leaned forward, placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
Emily slipped her hand into his and gave it a gentle squeeze, closing her eyes as she rested against Matt.
Matt watched Emily's chest rise and fall as her breathing slowed to an even pace. He shifted, trying to get comfortable without disturbing her. He rested his head against hers, thankful for the night off. As she slept, his thoughts drifted.
After a few minutes, he was pulled out of his reverie by a familiar barista. "Sir?"
"Huh? Yeah, sorry. Hi Julie."
"You guys looked like you could use these," she said, setting down two steaming cups. Matt shook Emily gently. Her eyes flew open and she sat up, groggy.
"Um, how much?" Matt asked, reaching for his wallet.
"Actually, it was taken care of," Julie smiled at the two negotiators and then gestured to the counter.
Matt and Emily exchanged looks as they watched their supervisor retrieve her card and sign the receipt. She grabbed her coffee and walked over to them.
"Thanks, Cheryl."
"You two look like you could use it," she grinned.
"Yeah… You headed home?" Emily asked.
"No, I've got some paperwork. I'll probably be at my desk most of the night," Cheryl said, "You two enjoy your weekend."
"We will," Matt said, "Thanks."
Cheryl nodded and left Matt and Emily alone once more. They sipped their coffee in silence for a few minutes and Emily turned to Matt.
"Let's head back to my place," Emily stood up still holding Matt's hand.
"Really?" Matt's eyes lit up.
"Well, we promised Cheryl we'd enjoy the weekend… I thought we should get started on that…" she said seductively.
"So, about this role playing thing…" Matt grinned as he gave Emily's hand a little squeeze.
"You couldn't resist, could you?" With a laugh Emily led Matt out of the coffee shop.
