A ditty that wandered into my mind and took up residence while watching an ep of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," on the subject of how seriously frightening it can be when reality might not be quite what you thought it was. And it's weird. But then, so what else is new? Still, enjoy. Hopefully. Or just be weirded out...

YOU WON'T FIND ANSWERS HERE.

Reality bends. It shifts, it blends into new realities. It shimmers like a heat haze; it dissolves like sugar into water. What was steadfast truth a moment ago becomes ephemeral uncertainty the next; what had you clutching desperately at the remnants of a toppled belief system leaves you firmly holding a new and complete something to have total faith in.

Reality bends. He is no longer a friend, but an enemy; he is no longer real, merely a figment of your imagination. She who had once been your greatest fear is now your greatest love; she who had been a confidante becomes someone untrustworthy, unbelievable, another enemy to doubt and vanquish. And you find yourself helping your enemy and lying to your friend, and you find your enemy is a sympathetic character and that you can no longer communicate with your friend.

Reality bends. It collides with itself and emerges as something new, something different; too many realities, too many possibilities. Realities that conflict with each other, cancel each other out; confront the reality, and it fades away like a dissipating morning fog; confront the reality, and the perception of it changes, like suddenly seeing the features of the person you love for the first time in a new light. Caught by the realities, tangled in the possibilities.

Reality bends. You claw your way out of the darkness, you scream against the blinding light; reality is a haze, a blur, that has no meaning and over which you have no control. Reality is a myth, a lie told to give you hope or despair, a fairy story with which to placate or feed your consuming madness.

Reality bends. With the darkening of the hot red haze, with the lightening of the cool syringe in the arm; with the explanation given by a friend, a partner, an enemy, an enemy who pretends to be a friend; with the disappearance of one personality to let another one through; with the waking up one morning and the going to bed another evening.

Reality bends.
