We don't own Final Fantasy VII. Promise.

A/N: So, this is a collaboration with SweetDragonSeeker, and my first attempt at a joint fic as well as a one-shot, so I hope you enjoy it.

Rufus

When he was younger, he didn't know what Shinra was doing to the planet, and to the people that lived upon it. He did not know that Shinra was preforming human experiments. He thought that the power, SOLDIER and science divisions, except for maybe administrative research, were operating similarly to the small arms company that he knew Shinra had once been.

Then he learned the truth.

The knowledge of what Shinra was doing hit him hard. At first, he didn't believe it. Only when he saw the proof of what his father's company was doing, when his father deigned him old enough to work at his side, did he finally accept that Shinra's tyrannical rein was causing suffering to thousands, causing wars, simply so they could exert their influence over the entire world. He wanted to stop it, fix it. Then his father taught him a very important lesson; that some things can't be fixed, that once some things start, they must be seen through to the end. That to ruin all that had been accomplished, would ultimately destroy him. Once a villain, always a villain, and Rufus had been one since the first time he appeared on screen with his father.

He had quickly risen to the position vice president of his father's all-powerful creation. He held more influence and power than any other person on the planet, excepting his father; and he knew that power power and influence all came from the suffering of others. But he played his part and bided his time, planning for the distant future, when he would have full control over Shinra Electric Power Company, and the authority to repair some of the damage the world had sustained at their hands.

Years later, he would sit at the head of the company, silver-tongued and oh-so-charismatic, a better president than his father had ever been. He would preside over the mad science of SOLDIER and the harvesting of the planet's life with a cold smile. He would wait until the world broke around him. And then he would piece it back together. Because the only way to escape the name of villain was to pick up the pieces once everything had shattered and remind everyone that Shinra saved them in the end.

"Tseng." Rufus said. There was a soft step behind him, and the sound of shuffling feet as the other Turks moved restlessly behind their leader.

"Sir?" Tseng answered.

Rufus stared out the window at the sight of the city slowly being built from the ruins of Midgar. Edge, they were calling it.

Lately, he had been thinking about the amount of Shinra employees that had been returning to their posts. With this new surplus of people, he could finally embark on his plan to redeem the name of Shinra. With this plan in motion, the parts of the world that had been damaged by Shinra might finally be rebuilt. It was doubtful that they would be able to return to and rebuild the old Midgar; nevertheless, they could do much to repair the damaged planet. They could rebuild Coral, restore Wutai, help to build Edge up out of the ruins. But he would have to be careful. Shinra was still a bad name in the eyes of most of the world. That would take time to change. Caution was the best path. He smiled, glancing at Tseng's reflection in the window.

"I have a job for you."
