Just something I randomly started writing a few days ago in the middle of the night.
DISCLAIMER: I cry myself to sleep almost every night because Leviathan wasn't my idea.
"Alek?"
"Hm?" Alek was on egg duty again and Dylan had come to keep him company.
"Remember that thing I was going to tell you about why they wouldn't hang me, and I'm not the soldier you think I am?"
"Yes…" Alek replied. He remembered how Dr. Barlow had come into the room and ordered Dylan out, something about regulating the temperature of the eggs.
"Do you promise not to be mad if I tell you?"
"Of course."
"Well, you see…" He seemed exceedingly uncomfortable. "I'm sort of a…a girl." He, or rather she, stammered. "My real name is Deryn Sharp.
Alek's initial response was shock. He had noticed that Deryn was a bit thinner than the other midshipmen her age, but he had put it down to not eating much. Now he could see that despite her uniform and short hair, she looked very much like a girl. A very pretty girl, to be exact.
"You're not mad at me for not telling you earlier?"
"No, I understand why you did it."
"You won't tell anyone, will you?"
"Of course not."
Now that Alek knew what Deryn was hiding, he could see how her hands looked very delicate and girlish, how her eyelashes were longer than most boys'. She looked almost fairylike. Her hair, he decided, might even have complimented her elfin features. He noticed her nose, how it turned up ever so slightly at the tip. He saw her soft, full lips, and briefly wondered what it would be like to put his own on them. He quickly pushed the thought away before he did something stupid. He felt himself blush, and hoped that either Deryn wouldn't notice, or she would assume it was because of the heat.
"Alek, are you okay?" She asked. She had a beautiful voice when she didn't disguise it, he thought. His mind finally caught up to what she was saying, and he snapped out of his daze.
"Err…I'm fine." He said nervously.
So… what do you think? Love it? Hate it? Should I write more?
