A/N:

This one shot has been written as part of a challenge set by the lovely people over at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry (Challenges & Assignments). The task was to about someone setting someone, or something, free. This could be a child, a secret, or something altogether more sinister.

Extra Prompt: (dialogue) "Goodbye"

Gringotts Prompt Bank: Family Vocabulary 17 - daughter

Goodbye

They each pushed their hands through the small hole in the side of the incubator and her tiny hands wrapped around each of their little fingers as soon as they were within reach.

She lay there in the incubator looking so helpless and fragile; she looked as though she was shatter like glass if they so much as touched her.

Each of them knew that the inevitable was going to happen sooner or later, and both of them knew that it was unfair to allow their daughter to suffer any longer. They knew that they had to set their little bird free; it would be selfish of them to allow a machine to keep her alive.

Tears trickled down Neville and Hannah's cheeks; this was the child that had longed to have for so many years, and it was heart wrenching to know that were going lose her.

The Healers had done all they could over the last few months for her, but nothing they tried had worked and now the Longbottoms were faced with making a decision that every parent dreads having to make.

When they had composed themselves, they summoned the Healer in charge of her care over and told them that they were ready.

As the Healer pulled the plug on their sweet baby angel, Hannah muttered quietly "Goodbye," and threw herself into her husband's arms as the floodgates opened.

Neville wrapped his arms tightly around his wife and rubbed her back as she shuddered violently whilst she cried. He tried his hardest to stay strong for his wife as they stood next to their baby girl whilst she struggled to take her last breaths.

They would never know their child; never know what she would have grown up to do. But they both knew that in setting her free they had prevented her from suffering any longer.
