"How was kindergarten?"
"Long."
"Long." Dad's echo was overridden by a baby's wail, cutting through the miniscule apartment. "Dean, could you--?"
"On it." Dean scampered into the bedroom. "Shshshsh," he soothed, approaching the second-hand crib. He yawned deliberately, Sammy instantly mimicking him, crying then replaced by soft cooing.
Climbing over the crib rail, Dean stretched out carefully next to Sammy. "Missed me, didn'tcha?" He snuggled the baby in the crook of his left arm, gently stroking Sammy's curls with his right hand.
"Once upon a time," he whispered, "there was a beautiful princess named Mary with long blonde hair…"
