A/N: this is a little idea I got when I was writing something else. Enjoy!
Carson looked up from the chart as Dr. Weir walked into the Infirmary. She nodded to him and he smiled in return. He had become accustomed to seeing her at this time, a few hours before curfew. She came by every night to sit by the colonel's bed.
Carson watched as she took her usual seat and immediately took Sheppard's still-mutated hand. He went over and chatted to her for a while, gave her details on how the breakdown of the retro-virus was progressing, and reassuring her that it would all disappear. He deliberately counted the days down to her, letting her know that he would be up in no time.
He never stayed very long, giving her as much time with him as possible, even though Sheppard was unconscious. During their chats, Carson had noticed a few little details; he noticed that every time she brushed his finger tips she would subconsciously finger her collar, and rub her neck while she was talking. He noticed that she would always adjust his sheets when she got there, in a slightly mothering fashion. Sometimes she would hold his hand with both hers and subconsciously fiddle with his fingers.
He also knew that when she was along with him, Elizabeth talked to him. She told him about all the things that were going on in the city, all the gossip she had heard through the day, told him about what his team was doing, and how the missions' offworld were going. She also chatted about some of Rodney's latest discoveries, failures and his current jam, like the failure in the hot water.
Carson also knew that everyday she came to sit by his bed she would count the number of scales on the back of his hands. She would perk up a little when she discovered that one more had disappeared.
Carson knew that Sheppard had been slightly conscious when she told him that she loved him, and that she had forgiven him. The colonel's eyes had been open when she muttered it to the floor, but by the time she had looked up again, he had fallen asleep again.
The good doctor usually ushered Elizabeth out at midnight, and knew that when she went back to her quarters, she lay awake for hours before she fell asleep and dreamed. He also knew that she always dreamed of John.
