Rare Magic

Fai pulled his house coat tight around himself and plopped down on the floor in front of the fire. Mommy had told Fai that there were lots of places beyond Celes that were warm all the time and on nights like this, the little blonde haired boy wished he could go visit.

The big castle they lives in was fun to explore, but rarely wielded any treasures beyond books and forgotten shards of ancient, outdated magic. One such dusty and well used tome had been located in a chest which had been masqueraded as a window seat, squished between two giant book cases. Fai and Prince Ashura had found the library during the last of the older boy's rare free days. The chest and its contents had been the discovery of today's adventure and he couldn't wait to tell his absent friend.

Small, pale hands trailed their way across a random page and Fai wished that he could read some of the bigger words. He flipped the page and gasped loudly at the illustration he saw there. It was a design. One that curled and weaved and flowed in the most entrancing way and Fai's fingers traced it absently, with growing excitement.

He flipped to the previous page and started to reread the passage, for real this time. He couldn't understand all of it and there were lots of things about runes and potions and incantations, but Fai didn't care about the difficulty. He wanted this, whatever it was. He could feel the need to have it and for it to have him.

Mommy had told him that when Fai grew up, he'd be a powerful wizard, able to do all the things he wanted. Even though, she had said this while the boy was complaining about not being able to do everything that she, his tutor, and even Prince Ashura could do, Fai was sure that it applied to this as well.

So engrossed by the old text, he was, that it startled to the bone when a faint touch registered on his arm. He whipped around to find Chii looking at him curiously. The blonde smiled warmly and bade her come closer, petting her ears. She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder and wrapping her arms around his.

"Is this one from today?" Her head was cocked to the side as she stared, uncomprehending, at the text. Fai nodded and threaded his fingers through her hair. She snuggled closer and the room was now a comfortable temperature.

"Yeah. I found a really neat thing that I want to try. I wonder if we can sneak Ashura-ouji out during lunch. Lantis-sama is usually really strict with his fencing lessons but he's bad at finding us when we hide."

"Ashura-ouji doesn't like Chii."

Fai nuzzled her and moved his petting to soothing strokes on her back. "That's not true. He just doesn't trust what he can't see."

Chii tilted her head upwards, nuzzling back and smiling. "Chii doesn't need anyone else to see her. Fai is her best friend."

The blonde boy giggled and hugged her tightly, the book for a moment forgotten. "I hope so, since Mommy says that I'm the only one who can. You are my soul guardian after all."

A/N: I apologize if anyone isn't farmiliar with X... but I have a soft spot for Inuki. 3
Also, I had to rewrite this twice with different takes and ended up with the simplier one. I hope it turned out okay. ;
