"How long has he been standing out there?"

"Almost an hour, and it doesn't look like he'll be coming inside anytime soon."

"Should we do something about it?"

"Nah. Let the boy have his moment. It doesn't mean anything to us, but to him it means the world."

"I'm just worried he's going to catch his death."

She walks away. I know she's worried, but I also know she understands. The poor kid is standing in a downpour with his eyes to the heavens. I don't know what he's looking for, but I hope he finds it.

Being cooped up isn't a picnic for myself. These endless days of rain and grey skies could make anyone go mad. For the kid, he just couldn't take it anymore. Ran right past myself, he did, but he didn't get far. Just out into the garden. I guess he knew it himself that he wouldn't stray far.

The lady returns to my side. We watch him out of the large window. He doesn't move. He lets the rain come down on him.

"You think he's fearful?" the lady asks me.

"Nah," I reply, sneaking a cigarette between my teeth. "He knows his place now, and the oath he's taken to protect the Phatomhive estate. We've all taken it. We're not going anywhere. And besides, we got nowhere to go. At least I have no plans to leave."

"Me neither," she responds back with the same respect, "I have nowhere else to go either."

She straightens up. She runs her hands down her clothes to straighten out any wrinkles. "Enough talk of the past. There's work to be done."

"You're right."

She hurries away. I light my cigarette. The kid must know we've been here the whole time because he's facing me with a blank expression while water runs down his face.

I give an affirmative nod.

His face breaks out into a smile. He nods back just as firmly. I don't think the kid is going anywhere either. In actual truth, he has nowhere to go either.
