Sound and Silence

A Spock/Uhura Fanfiction

The suctioning sound of the closing door is normal. Just like the gentle, constant hum of the ship's engines, the soft beeps and clicks of its systems, the muffled footfalls of the its busy crewmen.

It's the sharp, angry hiss before it shuts that assaults her control. A lengthy high-pitched noise, scraping violently at her sensitive ears. It reverberates in her thoughts, painfully echoing... as final as a last breath.

The pursuing silence presses down, suffocating her reason. She gasps out a sob at the intensity.

Deep down, she knows his logic is well-grounded. She can still admire his reasoning, the complexities and principle of his decision.

The room waves, severe lighting and constructed surfaces now an unfocused mass of color. Her eyes close but the flood pushes past her lids.

Her mind can comprehend...but her heart can't.
