Lemonade

Summary: On a hot summer day, Kiku brings her an icy treat. Drabble

The brunette looked up, her back leaning against the brick wall at the back of the school. The sun was shining at an almost unbearable level of brightness; the concrete ground she was sitting on was burning hot. This wasn't the best place to relax, with the glaring heat and the small space she was allowed to brood in.

But she didn't mind. This had been Kiku and Mei's meeting place after school for the past two years. Like any other day, she would wait for him today.

A breeze passed her, bringing the humid air and warmth along, and a lone sweat travelled down the side of her face. It was so, so hot. She needed something to help her cool down. She turned her head to check if Kiku was anywhere near and -

'WAAAAAHHHH!'

An icy cold glass surface had been pressed to her face all of a sudden, drawing out a deafening scream from the girl.

'Ha-ha, Mei,' a simple, unmistakable laughter came from above. She raised her head to find a black-haired smiling figure standing with two bottles of ramune in his hands. His face was mildly reddened from the boiling heat, and his light panting showed that he had been power-walking- if not running- here to see her.

A broad smile came on to her face as Kiku held out a hand to help her up, before giving her the bottle he had just startled her with.

'Sorry to have made you wait. I only noticed that I ran out of coins when I was at the vending machine for these,' he waved the bottle in his hand slightly in indication, 'had to go around asking for change.'

'No, it's okay,' Mei smiled, still holding his hand as they walked away from the sizzling sunlight. 'Thank you, Kiku,' she said softly, tiptoeing to give him a small kiss on the cheek. He gave her a shy smile before doing the same.

They walked hand-in-hand, chitchatting about events that happened throughout the day, smiles lingering on their faces as they did.

As he turned his head the other way to have a sip of the ramune, favourite thirst-quencher for them both, he wondered if the beaming summer sun had anything to do with his feeling so warm and giddy inside.

Ramune- Japanese lemonade. They usually come in a glass bottle and you press down on the marble that sealed the opening in order to open it.
