Nightmarish

Lady Wolfy

Faces of notorious villains and flashes of starbolts filled my mind as I dreamt. I had never been one to enjoy sleep; it was a complete waste of time, time I could be using to track wanted criminals or organize files. Then there was the bonus that almost every night, I had unpleasant dreams. This night was no exception.

I opened my eyes around two in the morning, my body drenched in a cold sweat and trembling slightly. My sheets seemed to be woven around my body, the result of much tossing and turning. I peeled them off my legs, grumbling profusely. I would go train in the gym or continue working with my files. Anything but this torturous sleep.

When I finally succeeded in removing the sheets, I slid out of bed and slapped my mask back on. I ran a hand through my un-gelled hair, frowning. I knew what I wanted to do, and I knew what I should do. Unfortunately, being the stupid teenager that I was, I usually did what I wanted. So with a surrendering sigh, I walked out my door and ventured to Starfire's room. I surrendered to the pull every night, the pull that I usually ignored during the day. The pull to her.

I slipped into her room quietly, as I had mastered the art of closing creaky doors. The wooden door slid to a close soundlessly, and I half smiled. Starfire's head rested at the wrong end of her bed, her hands curled up to her chest, as if she were getting ready to pray. Her long, crimson hair hung off the bed and tickled the spotless floor, something I found very adorable. I could see her clearly, for moonlight was spilling in through her window.

"Hey, Star," I murmured, walking over to her bed and settling on the floor. "I dreamed of you again. I think this time you were captured by the Joker, and Batman was telling me that it was more important to stop him than to save you... Something like that." Starfire's chest rose and fell, as she slept on cluelessly. Her lips were parted slightly as she inhaled and exhaled, her face never changing. I would never want it to.

"I wish you could know how... how terrible sleeping is for me," I continued, as if she were really listening. Half wishing she was, I dropped my eyes to the floor. "I dream of you getting hurt a lot, sometimes it being my fault. But I guess that's what I deserve, since I could never really tell you about this. About anything." Starfire stirred slightly, and she curled up on her side, knees brushing her stomach. She wore the same clothes she usually did, minus the metal thing that was connected to her top, and her boots. She was so beautiful that it hurt to look at her.

"I guess that's it," I finished, sighing. "I'll probably come back tomorrow night. Bye, Star." I stood up, gazing down at her once more. I then, without thinking, reached down for her hair. I moved my fingers through it once, enjoying the softness, before exiting the room.

Starfire then began to hover.
