"The eye is the window of the soul, the mouth the door. The intellect, the will, are seen in the eye; the emotions, sensibilities, and affections, in the mouth. The animals look for man's intentions right into his eyes. Even a rat, when you hunt him and bring him to bay, looks you in the eye." -HiramPowers, American sculptor (1805 - 1873)

Goggles.

Mello absolutely hated them.

No, he absolutely detested, abhorred them. They are the creation of mankind's greatest mistake. Especially orange ones, dark enough to conceal the wearer's eyes and light enough to reflect beauty in the color itself. Mello could only see his eyes when the goggles allowed him, other times the eyes were hidden behind the orange lenses.

Who in their right mind would wear goggles outside of skiing and swimming?

But unfortunately, the world is full of these morons. Morons like that big-headed Near and a human who pretended to be god, but that's another story for another time. And also, morons like a certain red-haired game-freak that Mello had a soft spot for.

Mello doesn't understand the need for goggles. They're not on a snowy mountain or in the ocean. Those were faded memories that were buried deep in both of their hearts.

Would goggles protect them from Kira? Would it save them? Would it stop them from walking this path? Mello doesn't understand the need for them, but at the same time, he understood. And he hated them. He hated them for their objective, for their function.

They were like a slap in the face for him, but at the same time he is grateful for those goggles for the very same reason he hated them. Mello doesn't understand goggles, but most of all he doesn't understand Matt.

Why would he wear something like that around? It's bound to attract some stares, but deep down Mello knew why. After all, if eyes were the windows to the soul, then Matt has protected his heart very well. He's grateful to the goggles for protecting his best friend, but they are a reminder that Mello is reckless and ruthless.

A constant reminder that Mello can hurt Matt.

Mello wished that Matt could trust him more and open up to him, but Mello knew it was impossible. So that's why he decided to hate goggles instead because he couldn't bring himself to hate Matt.

But that day he hated those dammed goggles more than any other days he had spent with Matt. The day the plan to steal Kira's "voice" was launched. Those orange lenses would not let him see Matt's eyes; they would not let him into Matt's soul. They did not allow Mello to understand Matt's feelings.

But that day, those orange goggles did not let Mello say goodbye.

This kind of just hit me so I just had to write it out. And about The Shinigami's Promise, I'm putting it on hold for a little while. It's just not coming to me, everything feels rushed. So I'm taking a break from it. I'm experimenting with third-person and I like it more than I thought I would. Originally suppose to be a one-shot, but it's going to be a two-shot.
