Because she was strong enough to apologise.
…
He looked at her remorseful face; with her eyes which still seemed forever tired, and felt that old feeling arise yet again. Chuck had known her for years, for longer than even Nate, and he could read her, partly because he knew that they were so much alike. So instantly, he could see the worry hanging on her; more than worry- fear. But even stronger than that, was her regret, he knew she was sorry before the words even left her mouth.
"I'm really sorry, Chuck. I know it wasn't you who sent me that stuff." She looked him straight in the eye, and he hated that her apology made him happy. Someone had once asked him what was so great about Serena Van Der Woodsen, of course he'd just replied with a simple, 'she's a girl'. But truthfully the answer wasn't that simple. She understood people, she understood him, she was true, she was kind; there were a hundred more good traits he could list. But her greatest virtue, the one which made him unwillingly love her was that she was the only person he knew strong enough to apologise.
Chuck, Serena, Blair and Nate had been best friends since they were six years old. But the only one that Chuck could ever recall admitting they were wrong and saying sorry was Serena. Nate would pretend it didn't happen, Blair would never acknowledge she was wrong, and Chuck would just turn it into a joke. But Serena? Serena would apologise; Serena would make you believe her. Her apologies were always sincere.
If he had to believe one out of their 'Indestructible Four', it would be her every time. If he had to choose the strongest quarter, it would be her. Because she was the only one who was strong enough to admit defeat. She was the only one who was ever tough enough to say that one word, five letters.
