Donna hums tunelessly to herself while waiting for her toast to pop up. Her feet are slightly sore from all that dancing last night – next time she goes dancing she's wearing a different pair of shoes – but it's nothing compared to the time she had. Alistair was a fabulous kisser. Even if he never bothered to call her, she'd remember the evening fondly. And if Alistair did decide to call, well, that'd be just wizard.
The toast springs up and she's spreading jam on when her mum comes into the kitchen and puts water in the kettle. "Good morning."
"Barely," replies her mum, giving a disapproving glance at the clock.
Her grandfather comes into the kitchen. "I changed my mind. I'll have tea after all." Seeing Donna sitting at the table, he smiles. "Donna! Did you sleep well?"
"I had the strangest dream last night," she says.
For some reason her mum stops and looks at her. "What kind of dream?"
Donna may be the one diagnosed with retrograde amnesia, but she sometimes wonders if her mum was the one who hit her head. She still has most of her memories, after all, and her mum hasn't cared about her dreams for going on twenty years.
It's not just dreams, either. Last week she was frustrated over the things she can't remember. Kicking the carpet in irritation, she'd muttered, "It's not like my memories are anything important. I'm nothing special."
Her mum had been reading, but looked up. "Now, Donna, that's not true. You're special." Then she'd gone back to her book as though nothing remotely unusual had happened.
Now both her mother and grandfather are looking at her, waiting to hear about her dream. Gramps she can understand, but she really does wonder what's going on with her mother. She scoops out more jam. "There were these ballerinas, but they were tossing pizza dough while pirouetting. Then more ballerinas came out and put the sauce on, like anyone could make a pizza while dancing. The Sugar Plum Fairy put the pizzas in a giant oven and really, wouldn't the Sugar Plum Fairy have better things to do?"
Maybe she had more to drink last night than she thought, because for a second she'd swear her mum looks relieved.
