A Girl's Best Friend
Lonely are the Kansas nights,
And dreary are the days.
I sing of rainbows over hills,
But I cannot find the way.
…
Yet there's one bright spark within this land,
And that's you right by my side.
My long companion, dearest friend,
Beacon in land grey and wide.
…
While both Em and Uncle Harry,
Have places in my heart.
You hold the deepest place of all,
My day's end and the start.
…
So perhaps the rainbow's out of reach,
A place I'll never go.
But it matters not while you're beside me,
My little dog, Toto.

Y'know, it's funny - after writing Don't Mess with Toto, I saw an ad in the paper today concerning a stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz that's also taking a darker look at the subject. Still more palatable than Emerald City though, considering that it's based off the book, and while I wouldn't call the novel dark, there are certainly dark elements in it that can be leveraged appropriately without making the adaptation recognisable.
But yeah, figured I could do with something a bit more lighthearted, so ended up jotting down this.
