Chapter I

Prelude

Some years ago there was a chocobo with no parents. Taking pity on the poor creature, a moogle named Mogna decided to raise the chocobo, who she named Ku. For many years the moogle and the chocobo lived in peace in Sleepy Forest, where there were no monsters or any other race except for moogles. It was a small and quite forest-like village where the moogles had lived for longer than any of them could remember, and the forest was rich with Kupo Nuts, a favourite food of the moogles. Life was peaceful for Mogna and Ku, and it seemed nothing could disturb their perfect life.

Until one day.

There was a vicious storm, and no moogle could remember there ever being a worse one. Trees fell over and crushed moogle huts, fierce winds cast hapless moogles into the sky and lightning struck the ground, causing fires to erupt until the entire village was up in smoke. It was a dark day for the moogles of Sleepy Forest. The elder moogle, Moon, gathered the survivors of the disaster into the centre of the forest. There were few moogles left in Sleep Forest.

Ku woke up surrounded by flaming logs, and all seemed hopeless. Fortunately for Ku, Moon had ordered the surviving (and unhurt) moogles to search for injured or trapped moogles, and Mogset happened to hear the cries of little Ku over the roaring flames. Mogset jumped over the flames and carried the small chocobo back to safety. When Mogset arrived back at the gathering of the moogles, Moon had the sad task of explaining to Ku that Mogna had no been seen since the storm. Ku, not understanding what this meant, vowed to find his friend, even if it meant leaving the forest.

So, when the rain had settled the fire and the wind had slowed, Ku walked valiantly to the edge of the forest, further than he'd even been with Mogna on their little adventures. Mogset greeted him there, and tried to talk Ku out of leaving the safety of Sleep Forest.

"Monsters live outside this forest, as well as other creature's best left alone." Mogset pleaded, but Ku would not be swayed from his quest.

"Well, if you must go, take this." Mogset said sadly as he placed a small jewel around Ku's neck. "Mogna found it beside you when he found you. Moon has been studying it since then, but he thinks its time you had it." Mogset said, and he waved as Ku left the forest, in search of his lostfriend.
