They sit on the wall, side by side.
Not 'together', far from that, but there is something. She might have smiled at him when he first sat down, a carefully measured four feet away. He might be stealing glances at her every now and then, like he wants to be sure she's still there. If she notices, it doesn't show. She's a diplomat more than anything, and she needs that talent most with him.
Behind them, their shadows stretch along the sand as the sun sets. She came out here to watch it. It sets in the west, toward the Fire Country border. Toward Konoha. He's noticed that she looks that direction a lot since they came back from the Chuunin exams. Something like a more poisonous form of anger tightens in his chest at the thought, but he ignores it.
The sunset is blazing in the sky, and in her hair. Gradually his sideways glances turn into a stare, and she turns to look at him. Her eyes catch the light, too.
He can see it in her eyes, that nervousness. Everyone has it when they look at him, but it's worse with her. He doesn't want to think too much about why. Still, she smiles a little and pats the stone next to her.
Without a sound, he swings his legs over the wall and walks back toward the village, away from the sunset and distant Konoha and his sister who is beautiful like his mother and who feels like any other girl should.
For a moment it hurts to think of her sitting on the wall alone.
But he supposes she has always been alone, and staying that way won't hurt her.
Besides, they weren't really sitting 'together' to begin with.
