Note: I wrote this a while back, when I first read a rumor of a female airbender who lived during the Fire Nation raids on the Air Temples. (Supposedly, she survived them.) I have no idea if it's legit, but I wrote this anyway. Take it as speculation, I guess.
from the mountaintop
Her toes are peaking over the edge of the balcony, peering down the vertical drop that plummets straight into the chasm of the mountain side. The wind is kicking up behind her, carrying embers like fireflies through the air. The breezes are shifting underneath her clothing, sweeping through her limbs. Careful to keep her balance, she raises her arms.
Behind her, her sisters scream.
A soldier turns. He has a face made of white bone. "Get her!"
She takes a breath, filling her body with air. The sleeves of her robes fan out as she leans forward, twin wings of bright yellow fabric fluttering in the wind.
And she falls,
falls,
flies...
