E/O: Bonfire. Set post 7x02. Even after he hit the bottom, there was still so much further to go. Bubbles of air hung above him, the only things that could really escape. So he watched. And waited.

In the beginning there was chaos spread over the earth.

As Dean Winchester's bloated corpse fell to join him in his watery grave, Castiel understood that some great bonfire was above them burning the world alive. Purgatory's sons enjoyed watching him drown in misery, rotting beneath the lake not really alive or dead. He could have fought them once but the meat on his bones kept him grounded.

After a time, Dean awoke but Castiel had no answers. Dean choked, "Were we always doomed to drown?"

The words floated into the abyss.

And a voice said, Let there be light.
