Note's: popped into my head just now, weird! [again, thank you my wonderful, lovely bata moonshooter1]
He catches sight of it as he stretches back, his shoulders popping into place, and he wonders. Wonders why he still has it, because it's obvious he doesn't believe, not any more. His eyes, drugged up and hazy, are lifeless. There's no spark of faith, no warmth. Not that the Angel was warm and fuzzy, but now there's just a blank coldness that tells him everything he could ever want to know about the future, and he hates it but for this one, little nagging thing.
He doesn't really get the chance to ask though, not until much later when they're in a truck, driving into what will most likely be a blood bath, and he's about to ask when Cas catches him staring and grins again in a way that makes his stomach flip flop, and not in a good way.
"You never asked." His voice is low, a hum that accompanies the rumbling engine as you drive over roads that are more pot holes than tarmac.
"Never?" You don't think Castiel realises that his hand it stroking your necklace, the one he demanded of you so that he could find his Father. "I find that hard to believe."
Castiel chuckles softly, his head slowly moving to the side to look at you with a somewhat wishful smile on his face.
"After Detroit, you told me to toss it, get rid of it, destroy it, back then....I still believed you'd pull something outta the bag, but you didn't and it all just....slipped away. You didn't ask again when you saw I still had it a day later. You hust didn't ask for it back, not once. I liked to believe it's because you still had hope but...that's life I guess." and the way he says, the sigh passing his lips, makes Dean's blood run cold. That's life.
Not if Dean's got something to say about it.
So when everything's done, when Dean gets back to his own time and sees that necklace hanging around Castiel's neck like a tomb stone, he swears the day will come soon when he'll ask for it back, because on that day the devil will be dead, Sammy will be free, and Castiel will not have fallen for the empty hope that hangs now from his neck.
