ALTERNATE SCENE

MELLISH: Listen to me! Stop!

Scene changes to find Upham at the bottom of the stairs. He looks up, knowing that he could save Mellish, but his fear paralyzes him. After a moment, the Nazi soldier descends the stairs. He sees Upham and looks him straight in the eye. He gives Upham a look that says, "Are you on my side?" Upham watches him walk away. Gunshots and bomb sounds are all around Upham. He quickly ascends the stairs to find Mellish. He find's his comrade's lifeless body, and he kneels down beside it. He points his gun to the doorway to be ready for anything.

UPHAM: I could've saved you….

He looks at the wound and sees no blood. These types of wounds cause internal bleeding. He puts one hand over his eyes and starts to weep.

UPHAM: What is wrong with me?

He closes Mellish's eyes and takes a deep breath. He now remembers every word the murderer said to Mellish before he died. Mellish didn't know what was going on. It was almost as if he had died in vain.

UPHAM: You have not died in vain, Mellish.

Upham fixes Mellish's Star of David pendant to sit on his chest. He says a quiet prayer for him and stands. He makes his way out of the room and down the stairs. He looks around. The battle is raging. He sees four Nazis firing at his companions. One of them looks strangely familiar…
