Waking Up

Ink, blood, and Firewhiskey soak the once white carpet. Paper, shards of glass and pieces of plaster cover the bed and desk. The ghosts of his anguished cries echo off the walls. The candle light flickers in the breeze from the broken window. There, in the center of the mess, the man stirs.

He pushes himself to his feet and walks across the room. He pays no mind to the glass piercing his feet. Why should he? All he's ever loved is gone. He slips his ruined shirt off his arms as he crosses the threshold into the bathroom. The fabric drops formlessly to the floor. His pants and boxers fall as well. The mirror reflects the face of a broken heart s he walks by. He pays it no attention and steps into the shower. The water runs crimson as it hits his pale skin and inky hair. He leans against the wall and relives the past night.

He had returned from dinner the night before to fid her note. She had gone. She couldn't take his lack of compassion. She claimed he was no longer the man she had fallen in love with and married. So she had gone, and taken his unborn daughter with her.

He had never meant to run her off. He loved her with all his heart. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. The only person he could truly say that about. He hadn't even noticed the changes in her behavior. She was more distant, yes, but he had never paid attention. He was slowly turning into the man he was before he'd met her. He'd lost faith in himself and then he'd lost her.

A voice called his name and yanked him form his memories of drinking himself into a stupor and breaking both the window and the wall. The woman's voice came again, followed by a gasp as the voice drew closer. She stepped into the bathroom and stared in fear at the man in the shower. Her long, brown hair fell over her rucksack and her loose maternity top showed her growing stomach. Finally, she opened her mouth to speak.

"Severus," she whispered. "Severus, I'm so sorry. I thought I could live without you, but mere hours away proved to me that I couldn't. I love you, Sev. I always have and I just want the man I married back."

He didn't reply. She watched as he turned off the water and stepped out. She ran towards him and buried her face into his chest, ignoring the glistening water droplets clinging to his skin.

I'm back, Hermione. I promise I'm back. I hate that it took almost loosing you to see that I had changed, but I now know I have."

He wrapped his arms around her and made a promise to himself that he would never again let her go.
