Sookie frowns the first time he does it, puzzlement painting her face as she reads the words on the front of the card. A thank-you note, she observes and only receives a nod and a knowing smile. Their first anniversary and after the shower of gifts and sex, he has handed her the card, something unrecognizable twinkling in his eyes. Inside, the words written in Eric's elegant handwriting on the expensive thick handmade paper fail to provide an explanation: Forever yours, E. He gently takes the card away, dropping it on their bedside table and pulling her closer to wrap his arms around her. A thank-you card, she says again and his grin widens, the absence of his fangs informing her that this is not a joke, that there is some significance to it, unbeknownst to her. Yes, he says, thank you. She wants to know what he is thankful for and he obliges. For this, for us. For being mine and letting me be yours. She takes in a lungful of breath she doesn't need - hasn't needed for over a year now - and stares into his eyes, hands tenderly stroking his cheeks. They kiss, Sookie's Word of the Day calendar having failed her in favour of something more physical, and neither one of them seem to care.
Later, Sookie tells him that he is wrong, that he shouldn't be the one who is grateful, that she was falling and he caught her and she had no say in the matter, but she wouldn't change a thing if given the chance.
The following year, the thank-you card bears the words Thank you for letting me catch you. Forever yours, E.
