Firecracker – Steel Train
He loved how her hair lit up a room. How she hated her smile, but her little pouty lips didn't let him sleep at night. He was ready, maybe, to do it all again. 5 years later and he wanted to watch her smoke cigarettes with that girlish naiveté again. He wanted to whisper things in her ear again, he wanted to fondle her earring in his ear in the middle of English class again, he wanted to catch her looking at him from across the room, he wanted to waggle his eyebrows at her, only to watch her blush and look down at her notebook, smiling hugely despite herself. 5 years later and driving down the empty highway he still couldn't forget her.
Lessons Learned- Carrie Underwood
She wanted that spark back, the start in her gut, the stutter in her breath, that feeling of beginning again. She sat on her porch, close to tears, watching the wind shake the trees, remembering his hair and how frustrated a windy day made her, how he had loved watching her fluster over her bangs falling in her face. She could still – on nights like this one- feel the crack, the dent he had left in her heart. Every tear she felt remembered him a little bit, and she let each one travel down her cheek slowly, wishing just for a moment that he was there to wipe them away.
With You- Jessica Simpson
She remembered the summer after that detention. She had stopped doing her nails, letting them chip and grow. She had started wearing her sweats and shorts to the park, laying in the grass with him. She would walk around the house in a tshirt and his boxers, they would play cards until 5 in the morning and he would kiss her pale, bare legs, covering each freckle with his soft, think lips. She had loved it, maybe even him. Maybe she had even been happy.
Breathe In, Breathe Out – Mat Kearny
He was driving, still. The golden lights on the highway keeping him awake, the semis behind him keeping him alert, the bright green signs each a sign of hope, a sign of her. He was getting closer and closer to Shermer and he didn't know what awaited him there. Would she be married? Happy? There? *sigh* He just wanted…to see her again, that was all. To have more images for the next five years, more conversations to remember every time he felt the little diamond stud still in his ear, more memories of her soft skin to think of every time he looked at the full moon.
What can I say?- Brandi Carlile
She stopped crying. Sat up straight. She would go! She would see him again, touch him again, kiss him again, hold him again. She wasn't planning on it but it had occurred to her now that she had nothing to lose. She'd throw the dog and some jeans in the car. She'd stay at her mom's house for the weekend long reunion. She'd bring the old earring she'd kept. She'd find its match. Her clients could wait a weekend, her dating life could stop completely for all she cared. She could go and see him. She reached down, scratching at the wood of her porch with excitement and she stood up, calling her dog and really smiling for the first time in years.
