Susan seldom took part in war.

When she did go, then war was close to home. So close that the gates had to be defended; so close that her arrows could easily hit Narnia's foes' chests; so close that nights would smell of blood and sleep would never come.

After one particular battle against the Telmarines that had taken place right at Cair Paravel, there were many deaths. There were many enemies dying after agonizing for days at the infirmary. Little rest, much work.

Corpses, familiar and unfamiliar. A miraculous fire flower elixir that could not be spent so unsparingly. No enough healing supplies. Not enough stone to bury the corpses. Victory in those times is always relative. There can never be much joy, for there's always enough grief.

It was at evening that day, six hours after noon, that Susan saw him, wandering through the piles of bodies. Studying them. Speaking to himself. He was dark and mysterious, but not like Edmund (he had a reputation for being 'dark') That man seemed unstoppable, unbeatable, unending darkness. Somewhat inexorable. Pure.

The man was far from her, donning impossibly white clothes in the middle of a place that had been a battlefield a few hours ago. He seemed tall, and as Susan got closer she saw that his skin was dark, like coffee when you add just enough milk. The man was wearing a suit, Susan could see, and a lemon-colored tie.

He was handsome, with fine features Susan couldn't really place. There was something in him that brought her nearer, that tempted her to get closer, closer, closer.

Thinking of Bacchus, Susan got within arm's reach of him, "Cupid?".

He turned, and she caught a glimpse of his eyes -blue, electric, a light in the depths. And a smirk.

But then, she blinked and when she opened her eyes, he was not there anymore.

Somehow, she knew him. Death.

Over the years, Susan learned much about Thanatos. An Angel of the Lord, he was merciful. And merciless, too. He was uncaring and compassionate and powerful and powerless and oh so alluring, sometimes…

A/N: I wrote this like, years ago. I found it while reviewing old files in my computer and said, why not? Let's publish it! So, I hope you liked it... and I would really like a review. *wink*
