Chiming Of The Dawn

When Mello left the orphanage Matt was the first to follow.

From his bedroom window he had seen the blond haired boy make his exit, only a coat and a half eaten chocolate bar on his person. Matt had known it would turn out like this, That was always how it was with Mello. Matt knew. After all, Matt always knew. Turning away from the window, he quickly got dressed and packed. Two bags. One for him and one for Mello.

His goggles, laying messily on his head, caught the golden light of the street lamp as the red head turned to take one last look at Whammy's house before lighting a cigarette before turning away from the old building that had taken him in fifteen years ago and the pale boy in it's shadow.

"Hey, Near." He said, blowing a puff of gray smoke into the wind.

"Are you going after him." Near asked from behind him, materializing from the darkness of the stone wall like a ghost.

"Yeah, bastard wouldn't survive a second without me." Matt said calmly, taking a long drag from his cigarette.

To that Near said nothing, though Matt thought he saw a flicker of sadness in those dark black eyes.

"I want to ask you a favor Matt."

Matt shrugged.

"You can ask, can't garrenty that I'll do any thing, though."

A cold wind passed between the two. Near, in his white sleep clothes shivered, but stood firm.

"Please, would you look after him." Near looked down.

The pieces all fit together smoothly in Matt's head, suddenly it all made sense.

"I can't make any promises, you know how he is, but I will do what I can to help."

Near looked up.

"Thank you, Matt."

Matt stubbed out his cigarette on the wall.

"Don't mention it, after all," he casually walked up to Near with his hands in his pockets.

"We are both in the same situation." he thought about it for a second and then added another statement almost as an afterthought.

"Though, I guess I might be a little better off than you are." he cracked a sad smile.

"I suppose you are, he doesn't hate you." a cloud that had been covering the moon blew away in the inky blackness of the sky, bathing the white form in silver.

"It's our fault, though, for falling for someone like him." Matt whispered into the night.

Matt shook his head.

"Here." he held out an object to the silver haired boy.

"Why are you giving me this?" Near questioned in an emotionless tone, though his hands gently held the only photo of Mello.

"If you have that photo, then he'll find you, no matter where you are. You'll see him again one day."

Matt checked his watch.

"I should get going if I want to catch up to Mello."

He walked a few meters out of the walls

"I'll keep my promise."

With that he went of into the city without looking back.

He would follow Mello to the ends of the earth.

For Mello, he would give up his existence.

He knew Near would do the same.

---------

When Matt was only but a small speck in his line of vision Near smiled.

"Really... Thank you Matt."

He held the photograph to his chest and hoped for the future.

The clock chimed the dawn.
